One in seven Britons has turned to credit such as a payday loan or unauthorised overdraft to help cover their rent or mortgage in the last year, a study from Shelter has found, as the charity warned that relying on such methods could lead to people losing their homes...........................
What would shelter prefer, that people take loans to pay for holidays and build up rent arrears?I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Most skilled people I know are not homeless. Perhaps HSW should apply themselves more vigorously.
How many homeless people do you know that are skilled?0 -

I am always amazed, that when people give money to Shelter, they genuinely believe it is going directly to the "homeless".
Shelters income last year was over £39,000,000.
Of that, almost £32,000,000 was required for staff costs, and £433,000 was actually given out as grants.
Yes, these staff help and campaign for the homeless, but I think that most people who donate would be surprised at how little of the hard cash they have donated ends up in the pockets of the homeless.
Personally, I always prefer to give my money to local charities which manage to get the majority of the cash to the people that need it.Nothing is foolproof, as fools are so ingenious!

To be fair, this is no different to any other charities.0 -

Fair point. I don't know any homeless people.
I'd like to wager though that homelessskilledworker chose his user name from a political standpoint. I question whether he actually is homeless and living on a park bench somewhere.0 -
I suspect what he means is don'townmyownhomeskilledworker. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

you're better off just letting these people starve on the street. once they are all gone, there is no more problem. easy.0

I would say that is true of the larger national/international ones. As they grow, they seem to get less and less money (proportionally) to the front line.
I do think that most local charities, generally staffed 100% by volunteers, are better at getting all of their donations to those they are supporting.
I am, of course, generalising, as there is good and bad in both camps.Nothing is foolproof, as fools are so ingenious!
