Can you freeze grated cheese?

I like buying smart price grated, but i always end up binning it when it goes funny (it says use within 3 days but u get a good week)

I'm really tempted to freeze portions...

I know u can freeze blocks of cheese, i remember my mum buying a serious bulk load when I was a kid, so we froze it.

I always have a big bag of grated cheese in the freezer. That way there is no waste, you just get out as much or as little as you need to use.

I work in catering and we ALWAYS freeze the hard cheeses - not sure whether it is ok for the squishy ones like camembert though?

Why buy the ready grated cheese? It has some sort of coating on it to stop it sticking together. YUK!
If you buy a pack of cheap mature cheddar, just grate it yourself and freeze it.Perfect! Probably works out cheaper too.
But if you like the ready grated stuff, then it is perfect to freeze.

The ready grated cheese is cheaper per kg than the block cheese, this is why i use it. I use the Aldi grated cheese as it seems to be the cheapest at the moment. I do like tesco's but aldi has too much of the coating that Rosie383 mentioned and it is yuk:eek:

I always buy cheese when its on offer or reduced for a quick sale then freeze it in portions. I don't grate cheese before I put it in the freezer because I find it grates neater when frozen, it doesn't clump to the grater ifyswim. The thought of paying full price for cheese gives me the shudders.

I have a box of grated cheese in the freezer and has bits of various cheeses in it - Cathedral City, Red Leicester, Cheshire, grated Mozzarella etc. If I see any cheap cheese in the reduced, I grate it into the box. If I do use it for cooking, I take it out of the freezer for a good hour beforehand.

The last piece of cheese I bought to grate was a block of TTD Mature Cheddar as the sticker with the UB wasn't there. We can sell these to colleagues as one of the fresh colleagues handwrites the ub date on the packet. Cost - 50p when its £4.

I always have a selection of frozen cheese in the freezer, especially small portions of blue cheese to make sauces with.
My local Sainsbury's are often selling cheddar cheese on the "sell by date" and can be picked up for as little as 19p per block. I sometimes buy this for cheese on toast etc, but use fresh stuff for salads, snacks etc.

I use a lot of cheese, if I have too much I grate and freeze but it doesn't happen often. I buy whatever works out cheapest if that be pre grated then so be it.
