underpaid tax ?

Hi all, this is my first post, so apologies if this question has already been covered.

I'm filling in the self assessment form online and I've hit a problem.
I've been told by HRC that, and I quote, "Our records show that your 2010-11 PAYE Notice of Coding includes an adjustment for tax underpaid. Please complete the following question(s)." Unfortunately this is news to me. I worked for an employer for 8 months of the year, and the rest was as a freelancer.
The form requires me to amend the figures, but I can't find a reference to this on my old wage slips or p45. Does anyone know what this means and how I can find out, I presume I can't continue with the form until I fill in this information.
many thanks

You should have received a P2 notice of coding that explains why your code has been reduced.

What code number did you have? (should be on your P45)

    And what are the questions?

    Hello there

You can call HMRC on 0845 900 0444 and request a breakdown of the coding notice referred to in the earlier post.

One of the adjustments to your code should be for "underpayment of PAYE for an earlier year". HMRC should also be able to tell you the amount of underpaid tax so that you don't have to calculate it - and you can then just plug this straight into the return.

You should also have had a P800 that gave the plain figure of the underpayment - possibly during 2009-10. As well as the figures on your 2010-11 coding notice.
