Messy - Defaults advice on obtaining a Mortgage

Hello
My sister defaulted on 2 credit cards and a bank account overdraft around 18 months ago. She has been ill and unable to deal with this. To cut a long story short, she has ignored the debt for a considerable period of time. She now has a job and is back on her feet. She wants to start paying her debts off and hopes to obtain a mortagage in the next year.
She owes around £6000 in total, a friend who works for a bank mentioned trying to offer the companies involved a settlement for less than is owed by enough for them to accept and close the account, does anyone have any experience of this.
When she sorts this out, the defaults will still of course show on her credit file for a few more years, does anyone have any experience of borrowing for Mortgage purposes with satisfied defaults on their credit file, if so could you recommend any lenders.
Thanks in advance

A settled debt is better. It will take time, she must realise that, star with looking at offers of payments.0
