Hi

I'm sorry if this isn't the right place to post this.

I received the following email today -

I am writing to advise you that two IT backup storage tapes containing data from Shopacheck's computer systems from October 2010 are missing from our offices. We want to alert you to this because these two storage tapes contain data relating to your application to Shopacheck. This includes your name, address, date of birth, telephone number and email address.
The storage tapes were identified as missing at the end of November 2011. An investigation is underway in relation to this matter and we have reported the loss to the relevant authorities.
We have no evidence that the information has fallen into the wrong hands. However, we cannot rule out the risk that the data has or may be accessed and so must warn you that there is the potential for your personal information to be misused.
You may wish to consider safeguarding yourself against any misuse of your personal information. Advice on precautions to take against identity fraud can be found on the government-backed Identity Fraud Consumer Awareness Group website at:
https://www.identity-theft.org.uk/protect-yourself.html
We have taken steps to prevent any loss of further data storage tapes. We are also reviewing the personal data retained by the business so that any non-essential personal data is deleted from our records.
Please accept my sincerest apologies for this situation. I very much regret that this has happened and we are making every possible effort to ensure that your personal information is not abused. If you have any additional questions about this incident, please call 0800 840 6563.
Yours sincerely

I know this story has been in the news ( http://www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/news/local/localbrad/9438853.Fraud_fears_as_loan_firm_loses_discs/ )

The thing is I've never taken out a loan with Shopacheck or indeed any other loan. Plus they mis-spelt my name slightly (Used the female variation) Which strongly suggests this is some kind of scam.

I can't see how I could get scammed just from this email, there's no suspicious link for me to enter my details - Perhaps the phone number is dodgy?

I guess I'm worried if Shopacheck is linked with any other company that I may have used in the past?

Has anyone else received a similar email? Any advice?

Regards.
