Just a quick note to report that, as I was having a cashflow crisis at the end of 2012 for my business (freelance photog), I made it my goal to build this cashflow reserve up using whatever means I could asap.
Within a week trying out different freelance sites and bidding on about 20 projects for photography and writing/editing work, I have made about £100 from a few hour's of work, and have interest on about 4 of my other bids.
I don't have a portfolio of ready material for many of the projects I've bidded on.
Thought this info might be useful anecdotal evidence for others considering this route.
I'm also going to pitch an easy idea on fiverr.com for a short term and low-cost way to earn more in the very short-term. I'll post back here letting you know how that goes when I've tried it.
For me, I have a specific amount of money I need to raise as quickly as possible (a few different goals, from £1000-10,000 actually*), so I'm looking at this as a short-term option where I'm happy to make those small $4 sales if the fiverr.com pitch works, to reach that goal, and I'm pretty flexible in trying out different strategies and ideas to reach my goal(s).
Hope this is of use to others. If you have other info or tips to share, please add them here.
*I've picked an ultimate goal of £10,000 with incremental goals from £1000 upwards to allow flexibility and to force me to prioritise expenditure. Depending on how my "proper" business and cashflow develops, I may stop these "side-line" projects early. But the key is my need to raise cashflow in the short-term, to overcome the problem of having to wait a long time on invoices being paid in my day-to-day biz. That's preventing me from working at optimum capacity on the day-to-day biz.
