I've received the SA252 letter and am now drafting a response to it. However as I've actually mislaid the letter, can I just double check whether anything further needs to be included in my response?

I've informed them of
  • Gross income
  • Tax paid
  • Tax code [they should have all these 3 from my P60 but have included for completeness' sake]
  • Salary sacrifice payments deducted under the Cycle to Work Scheme
  • Gross interest on interest from savings accounts
  • Tax deducted on that interest
  • Net interest received
  • Gift Aid donations made
  • Gift Aid tax reclaimed on those donations
I haven't put in anything about ISA interest. I don't think I've had any other income from savings although I've also mislaid my savings accounts book (memo to self - tidy up better before the family invades for Christmas next year ... ) and no other sources of income.

Have I missed anything completely obvious?

Thanks.

Quick bump as I've just realised I haven't yet replied to the SA252.

In addition to the above question, would you include details of pension contributions made given I'm so close to the 40% band? It's on my P60 but don't know whether it's useful information for them to have?

Yes definitely useful as this will reduce your taxable income.

    Many thanks, Jem.

I'll get the letter finalised and drop it into the tax office across from where I work.

Gross income is not on the P60. Taxable income is. I'm confused why you feel the need to send a letter in response to the SA252. Do you think you're paying too much or too little tax?

Are you sure? I've never known pension contributions to be included on a P60. If your contributions are taken before tax then this will be reflected in the taxable pay shown on the P60.
Did you really mean to put loose?
Lose: no longer possess, not to retain, unable to find
Loose: not firmly or tightly fixed in place
  • Hello all

I hope that I am not breaking any forum rules by posting here. To clarify I work at the company that John Pierpoint linked to in the last post.

Just to reiterate what is said on the afore mentioned page, if you have any concerns regarding the SA252 then it is highly advisable to consult a/your Chartered tax adviser.

Due to the political and financial circumstances we all find ourselves in, HMRC is 'cracking' down and so whilst most of us should not be affected, if in doubt then speak to someone.

I think I may be paying too little tax - gross income is just below the 40% threshold for TY 10-11; just over the threshold for TY 11-12. I've got some savings income which may take me over the threshold for TY 10-11, and some gift aid which might bring me back under it.

My P60 just says 'Pay'. It isn't the full gross income figure but also isn't the figure for gross less pension contributions. It may be the figure for gross, less pension, less salary sacrifice for cycle scheme.

Sorry for the delayed response to your helpful post. I think I shall just give them the figures and they can work it out!
  • I used to get a "P60 substitute" form with my April pay slip, back referring to my March pay.

This very usefully showed several totals including my payments to the company scheme and any AVC scheme independent pension funds.

The payroll department used to be driven mad in early March by the employees of Felixstowe docks adjusting their pension payments for the tax year. Their union used to do the calculations for them if I remember correctly.

    There, fixed it for you.
