DRO and security clearance (to join police)

My DRO was granted in August 2011. Just beforehand I had applied to join the police and was successful and given a training date until I received a letter from them last week saying I hadn't been granted security clearance and they wouldn't be able to offer me a position at this point in time.
I spoke to the vetting department and they said it was because of my DRO.
Now, the lady I spoke to at the vetting department was very vague and didn't seem too familiar with this sort of situation, and she said i'd have to wait "Three years from the beginning of your bankruptcy" before i'll be granted SC.
After I got off the phone I thought - three years? Where has this figure come from? She must be thinking of bankruptcy, which lasts 3 years.
I've emailed asking for them to explain in writing but it might take a few days to get a response.
Has anyone else been in a similar situation with security clearance?

FYI BR lasts 12 months not 3 years. But I have heard that some police areas like to wait 3 years after discharge before they will consider you. A DRO is a form of insolvency and is classed as BR by a lot of firms, it is a sort of BR light.BSCno.87The only stupid question is an unasked oneLoving life as a Kernow Hippy0 -

It appears that you will not be considered until 3 years after your discharge.0 -

That document specifically refers to "bankruptcy", though.0 -

as Tigerfeet says, DRO's are a form of insolvency...ie a BR but subject to certain limitations. No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......0 -
Hi,
I wrote (and subsequently spoke to) the senior recruitment officer of our local force about 18 months ago on behalf of a client and he said that national policy is that they will not offer a post to anyone who is within any form of insolvency and indeed even if they have an unsatified CCJ!.
If someone was already within the Police service then I was told that their case would be looked at "very sympathetically"

yes, that is apparently the reason - doesn't make much sense to me - I would have thought someone was far more ' a risk' when they were struggling with their debts rather than when they were 'officially sorted'philnicandamy wrote: »
all about being "open to bribe" so they told me
Strange!

It is unfair but I suppose if you screwed up financially once you may well screw up again and become desperate not to go through bankruptcy etc a second time.debt_doctor wrote: »yes, that is apparently the reason - doesn't make much sense to me - I would have thought someone was far more ' a risk' when they were struggling with their debts rather than when they were 'officially sorted'

I have personally seen this happen in one case where a police officer acted wrongly over pressure around revealing his bankrupt status, having said that I have seen many more examples where a woman was the cause of the wrongful action so make what you want of that :-)Hi, im Debtinfo, i am an ex insolvency examiner and over the years have personally dealt with thousands of bankruptcy cases.
Please note that any views i put forth are not those of my former employer The Insolvency Service and do not constitute professional advice, you should always seek professional advice before entering insolvency proceedings.0
