Sky TV help

I have Sky multi-room and my young lad has our old Sky+ box in his room. For some reason he is unable to record programmes or play any saved recorded programmes. Otherwise it's working fine.
The message bar has the code 06 - 0 at the top and a message saying Sky+ playback and recording unavailable. I rang the helpline number and they just said an engineer would have to call at a cost of 60 odd quid.
Anyone have any cheaper fixes or ideas. Unfortunately we don't have any insurance plans with Sky. The box itself would be about 4 years old.

They tried that line with me, when our multi room boxes weren't apparently connected to the same phone line, when we'd done nothing at all to change it.
I told them if they weren't willing to send someone out free of charge they could cancel it and we'd go to Virgin, as we were already paying them £60 odd a month. Funnily enough we got someone out the next week.
Could be the box is knackered, they seem to be more and more shoddily made. The frontier is never somewhere else. And no stockades can keep the midnight out.0 -
A quick Google gives this:

If Sky don't back down on the callout fee then you could just buy a new box yourself.
You should be able to pick up a Sky + on Gumtree for £20 then phone Sky and ask them to pair the new box with your existing multiroom card.
Or even better, try to pick up a Sky HD box on Gumtree for £60 - you shouldn't have a problem getting one for that and get Sky to pair your card with that. The extra £10.25 or whatever Sky charge for HD is per subscription not per box so your son could have a HD box for the same money that Sky would charge for a callout.0 -

PSU failure on the box,Thompson boxes are notorious for it.Eventually the box won't record,it'll switch to standby and then fail altogether. You can get the PSU replaced for around £30 or you can get Sky (Finlay Communications) to do a service call or buy a replacement.
The's a list of digibox repairers in the TV board sticky.0 -

ian has the box been paired to the signal
if you use a different box, you have to ring sky, and they will pair it remotely.

Their website is still showing as Sky Partners & a couple of the blokes I worked with at NTL/VM still work for them.
Saying that, the writing was on the wall quite a long time ago...
Lost it ages ago, Have you noticed the Sky TV vans with the fancy graphics ie. Simpsons and Discovery rather than the Finlay logo?
I think Paul got out at the right time when he sold it a few years ago
It was last April when Sierra were awarded itDave0
