If 16 hours' work/month = £300, then that's £18/hour.... you could afford to pay somebody cash in hand to employ you at NMW.

This is interesting; my partner does a lot of craft stuff (baby things, like material name hangers for bedrooms, customised aprons for toy kitchens etc.) and sells via etsy... it makes some money, but not huge amounts, although she definitely works on it more than 4 hours a week. It's more of a labour of love that makes a little extra money... she'd do it for free anyway. If that was registered as self employment, would it count? Are PayPal invoices etc. suitable for self declaration purposes etc., as it's all done online (both ordering materials and sales)?

If she is making items and selling them for profit on a regular basis, she should be registered as self-employed for that work in any case.

It *should* be registered as self-employment if this is an ongoing thing! She'd also be able to offset her materials against income tax (if she earns enough in total income from all jobs).

    So, yes. :)

' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".

Oh, thanks, I wasn't aware that it had to be registered until the turnover reached the NI threshold. Looking now I can see that there are various certificates that need to be applied for... so will get that sorted ASAP (especially as I'm now scared that the tax man is watching this thread  ).

Anyway, this may well have solved a pretty massive problem for us, so thankyou! We can probably even step it up a bit so that the income from it unquestionably covers 4 hours / week... I'll certainly have plenty of spare time to help her out when my employers bulldoze my hours down to 20/week. *sigh*.
  • Have a look at the first post in the mystery shopping thread (in 'up your income'), as that has lots of info about registering for self emp, etc. :)
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).
  • I'm in the same boat. I work 16 hours a week and husband got made redundant at the end of October. We are both frantically looking for something 8 hours a week or more otherwise we will be £68 a week worse off than we are now. And were only just making ends meet now.

So here's what I've done to help:

I've registered as self employed doing craft fairs. I do temporary tattoos and hair wrapping. I've been doing it 3 weeks so far and have found it's easy to make up 8 hours. Temporary tattoos are really popular at the moment. I do a craft fair every Saturday which lasts 6 hours, then there's the travel there and time spent ordering stock etc. I'm also thinking of buying some wholesale stuff to sell. I usually make about £20 profit per week but as long as we keep the wtc I don't mind.

There's going to be an awful lot of people/children living in poverty after April. Hope the current government is happy with themselves and feel proud for 'improving' the country.

I used to work in a concession in Debenhams 4 hours a week on either a Saturday or Sunday, and sometimes overtime at night if they were having the big sale days they had. I worked it around my 9-5 job in the week and I really enjoyed it actually (plus it was commission based sales so I actually got quite a good wage for a Saturday job).

I think the worst of it is that it's not been very highly publicised at all - the information is there if you look for it, but it's not been handed out to those who currently get WTC in big, bold letters at all. Those of us who are proactive and keep on top of these things have time to make some changes (I'd have had much longer if I hadn't been promised the hours months ago...) but I can guarantee that a lot of families have absolutely no idea that their income in going to drop significantly and suddenly in April this year.

Now fair enough, some will say that people should make it a priority to know about these things and know where their food on the table is coming from... but it makes me more than a little angry to thing that there are going to be thousands of children in this country struggling for food / warmth because their parents weren't on the ball with their finances.

This should all have been made very clear, in simple terms, to all claimants as soon as the 24 hour decision was made (which was a year or so ago).

what are these certificates you mention?
  • TROLL ALERT

I'll have you know I do work full time but it's for a charity so they can't afford to pay me full time. So I do put back into the economy. How many hours do you work for charity?

In my post it says we are looking for work at least 8 hours a week, which includes full time.

I hate self righteous people like you. I hope you get made redundant one day and find it hard to find full time employment.

    Thanks.
