Diary of a Reluctant Equestrian Small Holder

A new year and a new set of resolutions. We have two bank accounts, a joint one that has an overdraft of nearly 2 thousand on and the other one - in my name - has an overdraft of £972.12. I did the figures on that second one today so I know exactly where I stand. I have no clear idea about the credit card debt but thats racked up too.

I decided to start a diary to keep myself on track. Its quite a big step actually as i don't usually post much, but I am an avid reader and have learnt lots .... but clearly not enough to keep myself out of trouble :rotfl:

So a little about me ... I am self employed and work full time in order to pay for the small plot on which we live. I have dreams of being more self sufficient and I will be working on those as well as clearing the debt and saving a substantial sum this year. I'll chat more about that in later posts.

I know I am lucky to live here and have the plot so many dream about. There are plans for chickens (which may appear later this year) and thanks to the kindness of a local vet we nearly had a pig last year but the boyfriend took rather against the idea so that put paid to the rescue piglet moving in. I think the boyfriend doubted I would really turn the pig into sausages later in the year and he may just have had a point there!

Meantime the sun was out today so rather than review our finances I went out and weeded the apple grove. Its a lovely part of the place where last year I planted 16 baby apple trees of 1 and 2 years old. One day they will be big and strong and produce apples to keep us going from mid summer to late autumn plus plenty in store. Well thats the dream anyway!

Whilst weeding and pruning the hedge that divides them from the neighbour I mulled over our financial straights and am quite resolved to do something about that. First I need to find out where I stand, hence the rather specific post about the numbers on my personal account.

I also need to clear a lot of clutter here - so - I made a start by listing 7 books on Amazon and then quickly tidied a barn and found some horse rugs that I could part with. I've ebayed those this evening.

I feel quite motivated but Mr W wants me to watch some TV with him so I'll pop the depressing idea of checking the other bank account on hold for now and go and be sociable instead.

More tomorrow.
Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!

  • Well Watty, it sounds like you are living my dream so I will subscribe and wait for updates on how the dream plays out :T

Chickens are fab - I used to have some chucks and I do miss them, I could watch them for hours - if you are quite rural though you need to be careful about Mr Fox ;)

How much land do you have on your small holding? I would love a couple of acres and then I would like to have a rescue donkey or two.

Funnily enough, I was watching homes under the hammer this morning and they had a house that would have been perfect for us, a few fields with some stables on....... maybe one day I will win the lottery :o

    Good luck with your journey.
    Just keep swimming!
