on the subject of credit cards...
I received an application for Vanquis credit card. My bankrupty finished in 2010. I went online to fill out the application but right at the end it says in the t's and c's that you are not bankrupt. So can I apply or not? I dont want to use a CC but I would like to get my credit rating up?

You have been bankrupt, you are not bankrupt anymore.

They mean people who are undischarged should not apply.

Hi ex, Just to follow on I spoke to the advisor at Barclays a few weeks after setting up the current account, he said normally after 4/6 months of running the account in a good order I should be written to and offered an upgrade to a full account same with the initial card keep the account paid at least with minimum each month and there should be an increase in the credit limit not that i am looking for that but all counts to credit score.

Well I have had my co op cashminder since being discharged back in July 2010 and have never been offered an account upgrade. I pay in over a grand a month (which is usually one of the stipulations of opening a full current account) and NEVER go into the red but maybe Barclays are different??

Im expecting, like you say, for the Initial card to have a limit increase after a few months of good banking and maybe even a dip in the interest rate too after a while but for now i'm just glad to almost have that 39.9% APR Vanquis card out of the way so I can cut it up!!

For anybody watching this thread who is new to Bankruptcy or considering it or just been discharged. I want to stress that I am NOT getting credit so I can spend spend spend!!
I only want to run the credit card to increase my credit score to eventually allow me and my missus to get a mortgage at some point in the future. :D

After BR I would never run up insurmountable debt ever again! Not after the heartache it caused myself and my family.:(

I would personally attempt to get the Barclaycard if only for the much better interest rate they offer as opposed to Vanquis.
The Vanquis interest rate is a killer rate and if you dont manage it properly (as with any credit card), you will be back to being in big doo doo again!!

Just make sure your credit files have been tidied up and you're on the electoral roll and you are halfway there as far as the application is concerned.

    Good luck!

Its outrageous actually How someone 3 years ago was declared Bankrupt and could of ran up debts on purpose knowing they couldn't afford to pay any money back and gets to get a barclaycard especially when many struggle paying back every penny and BR's end up having a fresh start with no debts within a couple of years.

First read of this thread and felt I had to comment on this post. To quote Helen's post so directly and say the above is incredibly judgemental. How can you possibly know that Helen (who you were after all quoting here) ran up debts on purpose? Do you know her circumstances? The terms of the board are not to be judgemental and especially of new posters. That was Helen's first ever post and it is not surprising that Helen has not posted a second when that was the response!

Helen, if you are reading this then I hope that you will stick around. There is a lot of support and advice available on this forum and judgemental posts such as this are very rare; unfortunate for it to be a response to your one and only post.

I don't think anyone ever runs up debt on purpose, some are bad money managers, some are unable to manage their emotions so 'comfort spend', and there are many people who end up in debt through no fault of their own and on this board we are unable to know the circumstances of everyone or anyone based on what is shared here so I would hope we offer advice assuming the best of people rather than the worst. No one chooses to be in this position, no one likes it.

    @ sumo22:

If you have been declined a Vanquis card then its highly unlikely that you will be accepted for the Barclaycard.
I think the Vanquis card is the easiest to get out of all the credit cards (sorry to put a downer on you) so maybe have a look at your credit files and correct any mistakes and make sure you are on the electoral roll.

Maybe someone with more knowledge than me will be a ble to help you here??
  • Hi everyone, I filed for Bankruptcy in Nov 2004 and had a barclaycard at the time. I was only 19 back then so as you can imagine I was young and naive when it came to credit. Since then i have opened 4 Barclays Business accounts very easily and at this moment in time I have in excess of £100k of my own money in Barclays. Only last week i thought i would apply for a Barclaycard (I have not had any credit card since 2004), they sent me a letter this morning saying I already have a Barclaycard. I have just got off the phone to Barclaycard who have just told me I will "never" have a barclaycard with them as I have been declared bankrupt before and when I explained my situation and that I have all these business accounts with them the advisor simply said "that's not Barclaycard, that's Barclays". I thought they were the same company? Also does anyone know why the Barclaycard I had in 2004 that was part of my bankruptcy, is still showing as active? She says it shows as defaulted and another company has bought it?

Have a look at the Credit Reference Files Clean Up sticky and there are instructions on there to sort out your credit files. It should be off your files by now.
