It does occur to me that if some of this is leave and some time in lieu - the only time restraint on taking time in lieu is the employers. That isn't holiday, and within their rules - or anything they say - it can be taken any time. In other words - they can carry it as far as they want to let it be carried. perhaps an additonal negotiating point?

Lakeuk - DS is doing just as you did. He's not sure if he's going down the uni route or into work, so has extended his Saturday job. Most of his hours are evenings and weekends so he rarely seen the Personal person (only one I think).

They are not allowed to buy the holidays back. Use them or lose them, although you can carry forward up to 1.6 weeks with the agreement of your employer.

I don't think this is allowed for Morrisons staff. There is no agreement to carry holidays forward.

Reminds me of my former manager's "edict" where he handed out holiday forms for the next year in February and requested if possible to have them in by April 1st, his thought process being that allowed him to head off any potential clashes at the earliest time, if we needed or wanted to move the holidays he was cool with it generally speaking - i know that doesn't help your son much given he's only accrued this time since September but may be something to keep in mind for next year!

Well this saga goes on. So far my son has been 'offered' 20 hours of his leave from one manager, and a more reasonable personnel person has suggested he could take some of the other hours by going home early on quiet days. I'm not sure if he'll get more than this though he is continuing to discuss. If nothing else, it's demonstrated how useful it can be to join a union.

  • I work in Morrisons, and to be honest checkout staff should be able to take their holidays whenever they want. Every member of staff in the store is checkout trained. I can see where they are coming from though, every department is only allowed a certain amount of staff on on holiday every week, but if he keeps persisting I don't see why he shouldn't get it. checkouts is the biggest department with the most staff!
I work in the cash office and there are only 4 of us in there, it's almost impossible to run when there is 1 member of staff on holiday.

Well this is a big Morrisons and staff specialise (bakery, butchers, deli, etc.) so not all are checkout trained. DS did persist but couldn't get more than the 20 hours with an agreement that he could go home early if they have an occasional quiet day. In the end he gave up asking as he was warned by a manager that he'd be disciplined if he kept asking different managers.

I think he's learned his lesson and is already booking next years, although these dates are booked up until September already!

Easiest(on paper) solution is to get them to up his contracual hours(as he is part time) and then just take them as holiday.
