Can I still use my company car??

My company car is due to be collected on Tues 3 Jan as I have left the job 31 Dec - I am pretty sure they won't collect it on that date - can you see any issues with still using it on that date and for the rest of the week?

You will need to check they intend to insure you until collection. The fact you are no longer an employee is technically irrelevant (as these insurance policies will insure any driver the company want, employee or otherwise) but they might not be that keen on you adding on the mileage. Best to check incase something happens.

That's they key - if you don't have the nerve to ask your ex-employer whether you're still covered, you probably shouldn't be driving it! That said, it will require some insurance in the interim period unless declared under SORN.

No idea but if they don't pick it up, start a tab.

There was a bloke in the paper years ago who had stopped working as a manager for Sainsburys if I remember correctly. He'd written to them and told them to collect the company car at their earliest convenience from his driveway. 7.5 months later it was still there and he was keeping a tab at £45 per day for storing it as it meant his driveway was unavailable for his own car. No idea what happened to it after that, I would assume that given the bad publicity they probably either picked it up and paid him or wrote it off and left it with him.

Anyway, do they know the closing mileage when you stopped working for them? Also if its still insured then the car can be legally driven and its between you and them. If you still have the keys you can't be done for theft (especially if you are still technically responsible for it). I know if it were me and they wern't picking it up for a few days I'd be helping myself - one of the perks for keeping it safe and secure for them.

it's not worth risking it without getting express permission. It's your licence after all.

There may be a few issues if you are out driving it at the time they come to collect it.

Need to check the insurance situtation. It often covers for working for company ABC limited (policyholder), social and domestic. So if you have taken up a new job and are now working for company XYZ and drive it for their work purposes, then you would have no insurance.

I was left with the company car for months after I left my last job. I phoned the company secretary, who confirmed I was still insured to drive it. About four months later the boss rang me and asked if I would like the car for free and would I please insure it myself. :)
