Dr.Who-Who wrote: »Need help here please. Any of you using Blackberry sim free mob phone?
Is yes, can I use any sim to activate the phone? What about BBM? Will it cost me additional subscription?
I wanted to get the T mobile £5 credit;) and the owner said that I need to add BB services if I want to have BB messenger service. How do I do that please?
Is there any disadvantage of getting sim free phone or am I better off getting it from the likes of O2 or Orange server? I don't really want to tie up with any of them to be honest.
Is there any provider that I can use as PAYG?
I have a Blackberry sim free phone. I use my sim only tariff (O2) which has blackberry services.
You can't use BBM if you do not have Blackberry services added on to your tariff. It is usually around an extra £5 per month but prices vary with different networks. As far as I know you can't use the internet with a normal data allowance, it has to be Blackerry data.
O2 have a pay as you go tariff 'Text and Web for Blackberry'
Top up £15 per month and the £15 credit is your's.

Or you can add the Blackberry Bolt on to any tariff for £5 per month:

Thanks Aesop & Vicx,
But I don't want to pay so much and I don't want my DS to take for granted that I will pay £10/month:eek: or even £15/month. To me that is far too much for a 17 yrs old lad.
I don't even know why he needed Blackberry! Don't know where he is going to find dosh to pay every month cos' I ain't going to do it & they don't get allowance from me either:A.
So in other word, if I buy Blackberry for him & go with virgin (since I am their loyal customer!!) for the £5/month deal its no good for Blackberry?

No you would need to add a Bolt on for Blackberry or choose a Blackberry tariff:

you can use any provider as PAYG, but are you specifically talking about BBM PAYG? I think so, ( I told you, I am not that advance when it comes to mobile phones its too complicated for me:o)
better to have unlocked phone as you can switch out sims for different networks. OK
to activate BBM, it doesn't matter what plan or network you are on, you need to have internet access though, so need data plan on your package. goto app world and download BBM. Then contact your friends who have BBM and when they accept you, you can start messaging them.
Do I have to pay extra to activate BBM? my internet is wireless, so the download is free right?
I think thats what he is after messaging them!!!! sometime I feel like talking to them via message makes more sense than talking to them directly!:rotfl:RIP my dear dear parent : Mum aged 62 (17/5/1990) & Dad aged 89 (23/1/2012)0 -

If the BB services is not included in your tariff (a tariff for Blackberry) then you would need to add a bolt on for Blackberry and pay a monthly charge for the BBM & BB internet/data which is usually an exra £5 per month on top of your tariff.
Wifi is not free on your Blackberry unless it is included in your tariff. It would usually say something like 500mb data and unlimited wifi.A home without a dog is like a flower without petals.0 -

Doc, you would have to get him the Blackberry sim, even with Virgin, it is £10.99.
And to be honest, a 17 yr old ONLY spending £10 a month on his phone - I think that is a good deal!
My Stepdaughters, at the time were 14 and 17 with mobile phones that their mum paid for!!! The oldest had to go on contract as she was always running over her credit. Their Dad (my DH) used to buy them new phones at xmas each year! and then 3 months later they would tell him they had gone and bought new phones!
Your DS sounds very well behaved and to only spend £10 a month is very good going for a 17 year old! Most 17 year olds I know, their parents are paying £30 a month contract!!!!
And if he gets BB, he won't need much else, as he can talk to his mates as much as he likes for free.
Go on Doc, let him have it for £10 a month. or £10.99 or £15.
We got to remember youngsters now are not us! They have to have the latest technology to keep up with the world we live in, or be able to use it, so they can get on in life.0 -

If is makes you feel any better my pay monthly bills were never under £150 when I was 17 - 21. Unfortunately I paid for them myself.
I am now on Pay Monthly 'sim free' (would never get into another handset contract) £10 per month gets me unlimited texts, unlimited blackberry data/BBM/Email, 300 any network calls plus unlimited o2 to o2 calls and unlimited wifi.
I got my sim when it was on offer around 2 year ago so if the sim is still only £10 I think the allowance will be less than what I get.A home without a dog is like a flower without petals.0 -
