Cat's new obsession with milk

Tufter's 16 now, a boy cat, and he's never been particularly fussed about milk - I've bought him the occasional Whiskahs Cat Milk and he's had little bits of it but I usually have to throw the bottle out halfway through.

Well he now seems obsessed with my semi-skimmed! He's been seeking the bottle out and trying to get hold of it, and when I do pour him some he laps it all up straight away and asks for more.

He's been mewing at me all morning - he's got a bowl of fresh water, a bowl of wet food and even some left over sour cream in his treat bowl but he just wants milk!

I'm a bit concerned that if I indulge his cravings I'll be giving him too much lactose... what do you reckon?

  • Aren't they odd how they suddenly decide they like something!

Have you tried watering it down at all? One of DMs dogs rarely drinks water but if you put (literally) a spoonful of milk in to colour it - she'll drink it all up!

Other option is to buy Lactofree milk - I was going to say it's expensive but compared to the price of the wee cat milk carton's it's probably not too bad. Pretty sure you could freeze in tiny portions. HTH

Good tip! I just poured a little milk into his water bowl... mad hopping up and down excitedly waiting for the milk, and now he's lapping it up. That'll be better for his old kidneys

Has he had his teeth checked lately? Habits usally change for a reason; they dont show pain as we do but cavities can affect what they choose to eat and liquids may be preferable to him now if he has any cavities or gum inflammation he may instinctively try to get his nutrition in the easiest form.

You could try mashing down his wet food in some warm water to see if he prefers that consistency, as wet food can cling to the decayed area of tooth and cause discomfort

He has always had very bad teeth - they were pointed out to me when I first got him and the vet doesn't do much with them any more. But, having said that, he is still eating very well indeed - he can get through 5 or 6 pouches of Felix 'Good as it Looks - Senior' every day! And he's still a skinny !!!!!! :rotfl:

He doesn't manage whole raw fish any more, and has gone off his old favourite prawns. So now his special treat is a bit of soft battered fish from the chippy .

He did go through an obsession with water for a while - every time I drank some he'd be asking for a capful, and every time I went to the bathroom he'd jump in the sink and ask me to turn the tap on. I was concerned about his kidneys so I took him in for a blood test but they said he was fine. Now it seems he's moved on to milk-coloured water. The man's more changeable that any I've met before!

Jerry (12 year old) has always been into his (my semi skimmed) milk, he is an absolute terror and has been for the last year, whenever he sees me making a drink or having cereal he will follow me to kettle/cupboard and will sit and glare at me whilst licking his lips. If I ignore him he will shout at me. He then follows me to the fridge and back to the cup, watches me pour the milk and then starts demanding milk. Similarly his brother Tom has now decided he wants milk and will wait by the dogs dish for milk, thankfully he's not as demanding as Jerry! The funniest thing is that neither of them will drink milk from their bowls. It HAS to be drunk from the dogs bowl, they make the dog wait until they've finished with the bowl before he can use it!
