Do you sell what you've made?

So...do you sell your handmade creations? If so, is it profitable and do you enjoy it?

Well I am only just getting back into crafting but when I used to do glass painting (about 13 years ago!) - I used to sell it and it was quite profitable but there was trial and error in what the best items to sell were. I did mainly orders for people so it was ok.
  • I was also wondering about this. I made some Damson vodka & gin this year as gifts and they went down really well. As it was so successful I wondered if I could make more next year & sell it?

If anyone has sold their goodies how & where have you sold them?

I set up a facebook page last year along with a Folksy shop and I sell my handcrafted items through both. I have been very busy since September. I love crafting and have always made things since being a child but only set up my online shops last year. it is nice to make extra pennies from it but what I love most is the fact that people actually like my items enough to want to buy them. Yes I make stuff and do the occasional fair to get rid of stuff simply cos I don't have room. I do mainly knitting and crochet as well as a bit of felting. I couldnt do fairs regularly as I wouldn't keep up with making stuff! I don't make an awful lot out of it considering the time some of the stuff takes to make but it all helps. I only do maybe 2 fairs a year. The rest of my stuff is given away as gifts!

You would need a licence to sell alcohol and public liability insurance.

I only started crafting at the end of October but my friend makes wonderful things and does lots of fairs. She took a lot of my things and sold them on my stall and I was stunned to make about £60. Because I'm new to craft I have spent a lot over the last few months - (I guess it takes time to build up a decent stash!) so I don't think I've made any profit but to me the amazing thing is that people have, through choice, bought something I have made. It still sends shivers up my spine!!

I started selling things last Christmas, just off the back of a manager having seen some of my creations on Facebook and asking me to bring some in. I sold within work and through Facebook and did really well. This year I took a bit more of a plunge and got myself into 2 school Christmas fairs and one local Christmas Market, and whilst it was a bit frantic and stressful getting everything ready, on the whole I did really well and it meant I had some extra pocket money to spend across Christmas. Again, I did a lot of business through my Facebook page too, so it seems to work well enough for me.

I don't want to come across big-headed when I say this, but I really do feel my products are good and that's what makes people want to buy them. The market is literally flooded with so many of the 'same' things at the moment, so you really need to have a bit of an edge and show that you have invested time in your creations to make them worth buying. It has really opened my eyes to what's out there, in terms of competition,. For me, it was really interesting being at some of the craft fairs as certain lines would sell well at one venue and then it would be something completely different that sold well at another venue!
  • Thanks for replying everyone. Hopefully what I have in mind will be popular/sell well.
