Strategy for job applications

Happy new year all - I hope you're all finding much more interesting ways of bringing in the new year than myself!!

I was hoping to get some sage advice from people here as to how to approach the application process for two positions, one of which reports to the other. To clarify, two jobs are going with same company. On reading the original advertisements, I thought I would apply for both, however I've now read the more detailed job descriptions and have discovered that one position reports to the other.

The positions are similar - the main difference is that one is more hands on than the other, which makes sense as one has the overview role. I think I would be just as good in either role and as it currently stands, I would need to think hard as to which one I would prefer, all things being equal. Each of the roles has it's own 'pluses'.

Ideally, I'd like to be considered for both roles, but just not sure how it looks to the company if I apply for both - ie would they interpret that as being uncertain of my own abilities? If I applied for the more senior role and they decide that I'm not quite there yet in terms of experience, would they consider me for the more junior role automatically?

If I did just apply for the senior role, should I put a sentence in the cover letter saying that I would also like to be considered for the other role? If so, any suggestions as to how to word that?

I hope that the above all makes sense! Many thanks to you all and happy new year again!

can you telephone them and discuss with anyone.

I would not assume they will consider you for the junior role automatically, they may think you are looking for a more senior position

where does your actual experience lie? What is the next logical step on CV? If you are really not sure, and assuming the lower pay of the junior role is not an issue, I would apply for senior one, but perhaps cover this off in a very good covering letter as to your motivations for wanting to join the company, or have that conversation by phone first, and take it from there.
