What is going on in Tower Hamlets?

I don't know if anyone else reads the Andrew Gilligan blog on the Telegraph website, but it makes for interesting reading about what is going on in Tower Hamlets, a borough only a mile or so away from the financial capital of the UK.

I can't believe some of the things I am reading and I am quite glad I don't live in Tower Hamlets.;

    Gilligan has been following a fantastic story there for months but the rest of the media (notably the BBC) are too scared to take it up, for fear of the ususal cries of 'racism' from the hard of thinking..

    I lived in Tower Hamlets for a year and in many ways it was a nice place to live. If you have to live amongst low income people in local authority housing there are far worse people to live amongst than South Asian muslims. They are generally polite, unobtrusive neighbours who look after their neighbourhoods. The chavs and urbans were a total nightmare on the other hand.

    The amount of graft in the council and local government is entirely unacceptable though, it mirrors almost exactly the corruption that a lot of people leave Bangladesh and Pakistan to escape. Its only tolerated because its a lefty council and due to neurosis about racism. No other council would get away with behaving like that.

    When I lived there there was found to be wide spread vote rigging in Hackney and none of the culprits got anything more than a slap on the wrist.

    Private Eye would be a mere pamphlet down the years without Tower Hamlets stories.

    Some things don't change it seems.

    Pretty shallow stuff there. A company goes bust, can't pay what is due, but Directors carry on and reward themselves handsomely. Banks anyone?
