When you say "what kind" of pension did he have, what sort of keywords am i looking for when i look through the paperwork?
Personal pension, stakeholder pension, occupational pension, final salary pension, group personal pension.
I should imagine that the lump sums have already been taxed and that they are classed as taxable income so at least for this year your mum is a taxpayer.
Worth finding out for your own sake though. Is it only your mum that is entitled to a pension or are any family members also entitled?0 -
I don't think it was a stakeholder. From briefly discussing pensions with him i wouldn't have thought this would be it. Occupational pension perhaps, but i'll need to scour the paperwork to be 100%.
We thought it was only my mum who was entitled but it turns out my 20yo sister who's in full time college is also entitled to [something]. Capita hartshead weren't very clear with the wording though. They wanted bank details, so my mum filled in hers, as everything has been requiring her bank details. CH returned the form saying that they need my sisters bank details so they'll be sending out a form for her, but we've been waiting a few days now.
I would've thought that they'd have sent the letter addressed to my sister for her own details rather than sending to my mum for my sisters bank details. They had my sisters name & address through previous correspondence with my mum.0 -

Sounds more like a final salary pension then.
Capita Hartshead deal with civil service pensions ( although quite possibly others as well). Was your Dad a civil servant?I would've thought that they'd have sent the letter addressed to my sister for her own details rather than sending to my mum for my sisters bank details. They had my sisters name & address through previous correspondence with my mum.
As it's a dependent's pension, the normal communication is through the parent.0 -
Will your mother be entitled to Bereavement Allowance? Also taxable?
Will the £10000 lump sum she has received affect her benefits?
There seem to be so many questions hanging over her tax and benefits position that she needs to contact the benefits people, HMRC and possibly the council as well for clarification? And as soon as possible after the holiday?0 -
Aye, she's going to start on the phone tomorrow as i think TSB phone line may be open then.
And then the rest of it on Tuesday.0
