Do I try to move 'up the ladder' already?

Hiya,

I posted on here a while back when I was having probs finding work and 1st off just wanted to say thanks to those who helped & supported me then.

I have now been in work since the 1st week of November and am really enjoying what I am doing, the only hitch being really that I had to take a position which was a side step in terms of moving from being a specialist to a generalist role and taking a cut in income of ~£250pm (although there are some additional benefits of the role which offset this somewhat).

Anyway I was looking in the intranet at work and saw a position in my specialism for ~£6500pa more than I'm on now and I'm wondering if I should go for it having only been with the company for such a short time. The role I am doing now has a 6 month training/evaluation period and I'd have to let my boss know I was applying for the job as its internal and I'm loathe to do anything now which could reflect badly on me during this time and am also unsure how trying to change jobs already after just 2 months would play with the team I'm applying to?

Several people in my team at work know what I did previously and have encouraged me to go for a higher position when I can but I'm not sure if they really thought it would be just yet or whether I should just sit tight for another 6-12 months and hope another similar role comes up again.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Is the new role limited to people who are outside their probationary period?

Don't just apply talk to your current boss about the opportunity to gauge a reaction.

It must be fairly obvious that this sort of thing would be of interest unless you played it down on CV and interview.

If possible also see if you can get to see the recruitng manager for the new possition, at least if this time it does/can not work you are on the radar for future opportunities.

Thanks for the advice - I think you're right & I need to have a word with my manager (hubby said that too). I just get so nervous & wirried about these things!

While I'm training I also have a current employee as a trainer/mentor so may mention to her 1st as she has worked under our boss for a while so may be able to.advise me on doing this

  • Hi Boss - look, I'm really interested in that role but I realise I've only been here 5 minutes. I'm going to apply, because it is right up my alley and the chance may not come up again. If I don't get it then no hard feelings, but I can't sit back and watch this opportunity pass me by.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

  • But do expect your current boss to hate your guts and use any and every opportunity they can to bring you down if you do take it.

This happened to me not 6 months ago. I got promoted to a new job and within 3 months something better had come up, so I went for it. My name is now mud back in the part of the business I left.

Do what is right for you but don't expect everyone around you to be happy to see you move on so quickly.
