Stuck on job application...

I'm in a middle of a job application, and I'm stuck! :(

What is the difference between "proven communication ability" and "confident in communicating with a broad range of individuals using
various methods"?

Basically these are in the personal specification, the first one is under "Education/Training/Qualifications" and the second one is under "Work Experience"...

Now I'm supposed explain how I meet the essential desirable criteria for each section, how do I do this without just repeating myself? :)

I would say 'proven' suggests having evidence of such, perhaps evidence of courses attended? I know in the past i have been on communicating courses and have obtained certificates etc.. or maybe it just means you know how to email/fax/ use a phone

The latter suggests evidence of work related situations, perhaps examples in past jobs where you have had to present to an audience, or maybe chair meetings?

I'd partly agree. Strange that the first one is under that particular heading as having attended a course doesn't automatically mean you're actually any good in practice! Nevertheless, if you've been on a written or other communication courses then do put them down. Also, perhaps, if you've successfully communicated something to someone with a particular outcome, that could go here or in the second section as you choose.

The second heading I'd say is more about tailoring your methods of communication to the audience and situation.

If you can give examples of what you did, why, how, and with the outcome, it will show the application of your skills.
  • I haven't attended any communication courses so I guess that section will look awfully bare lol (they asked not to repeat anything I have put in the education and training section where I listed of the qualifications I have gained).

Work experience in communication, I have loads, so I guess it is not all bad.

think outside the box. Think of other ways that you can communitcate with people maybe think about family and children and how you can and would communiate with them. When you write job apps its not just work experience but life experience as well.

  • You don't necessarily have to be able to demonstrate every area of the person specification in your application, particularly if it isn't something tangible.

Communicating with a wide range of people and using different methods to do this can cover anything from responding to queries from different levels of staff in an organisation (from Chief Exec to domestic) either via email, face to face, on the phone, etc.

Unless this is an entry level post in the organisation I wouldn't use examples outside of the work environment unless it is directly relevant as it doesn't look very professional.

    Good luck!

Try to put something in there if you can. You definitely won't get any marks if it's blank. If you've loads of experience, try to select one of those examples - perhaps you were mentored or coached by a manager or other colleague towards a new style of communicating or for a new type of job, with an example of how you put that into practice? Training can be through induction, or on the job, as well as courses.

Are there 3 sections on the form relating to what you're asking about: 1) where you list your qualifications, 2) the courses section, and 3) work experience?

That does rather seem like overlap, so do be creative as suggested.
