Hmrc debt, would it be ccj or bankruptcy?

I owe £6600 tax bill which has to be paid by end of jan. I can pay off about £1500-1600 from the debt but can't clear all of it in that time. They have threatened legal action if it's not paid. For that amount would it be ccj or bankruptcy? If I can get it down below £5000 would that make a difference?
Also how long does it take for the whole process to go through? Is it a matter of a few weeks or months? If its months I could probably pay it off in that time!!!
Any advice??

They will negotiate as long as you are up-front and honest; come up with a repayment plan and stick to it.
Good luck
(and they don't generally move too quickly!)DF

Thank u, they won't agree a plan I had a woman on my door step saying they will take assets but that she had looked around and there was nothing worth taking, then said I had 3 months to stump up the money as the debt is over a year old. Went above her and even they still would not agree a repayment plan

Apologies - did not realise the debt was an aged one.
Was it a Baliff that came round? Or a Debt Collector?
Are you in a position to make sizeable payments to the debt over say the next 6 months? If so then it is in no-one's interest to start Bankcruptcy proceedings.
Have you made any payments in the last year?
Did you call HMRC or write?
Bit more info and hopefully I can help.

hmrc = bankrupcyDon't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0

HMRC are one of the few creditors that will actually make someone BR, most others threaten it but do not actually see it through.:pB&SC No. 298

HMRC also tend to use BR as a way of closing files.0

you never ever let anyone in the home unless they hold a baliff warrant from your county court , and you get a min of 7 days notice, anyone else is a self commissoned debt collector and only to be spat on .They have no powers on ly the knowlege of what you tell or show them.if only life was a box of chocs0

If the Field Force Agent has already decided that there are insufficient assets for distraint action then CCP wouldnt be worth it either, so it looks like bankruptcy BUT
Even if it goes for bankruptcy proceeding the Enforcement & Insolvency Service office in Worthing MAY agree to a repayment plan.
Hope this helps.Thank u, they won't agree a plan I had a woman on my door step saying they will take assets but that she had looked around and there was nothing worth taking, then said I had 3 months to stump up the money as the debt is over a year old. Thank you for your replies everyone!
Back in business: yes I can now make sizeable payments by which I'm talking £1000/month. It was one of those field officers who came round not a baliff I basically told her I wouldn't speak to her and haven't seen her since. I have written hmrc nothing has been done on the phone, I wrote 2 months ago asking if they would allow the 3 months the field officer said I could have to clear the debt and it took them 2 months to reply to me!! The answer was a yes but there's no way I can stump up £6000 in the next 3 weeks which is the deadline.0
