Taking a name of the mortgage, how easy?

I went through a similar process last year - removing my ex girlfriend from the mortgage. Essentially, it's a remortgage process (I thought it would be far easier to remove a name!). The lender has to assess the remaining party's ability to repay the mortgage and issues a whole new mortgage for that person, effectively cancelling the old one. Legal fees were around £500 but in reality it didn't involve any extra outlay as the fees were paid out of the money generated by remortgaging.

I suppose the process might differ between cases, but essentially it's a remortgage.
