Freezing sausages query

Sorry if posting in wrong area so please move if wrong.

I'm currently creating a recipe book of meals for one (for myself). So that when I move out (hopefully in March) I will be able to cook for myself without wasting food and money.

If I buy a pack of sausages normally in packs of 6, I will only use 2 for the meal so I was wondering how do I store the others in the freezer.

Do I wrap them in clip film in sets of 2 or is there another method?

You need to wrap them in packs of two and LABEL them! I've got random things wrapped in foil in the freezer and I don't know if they are chicken, fish or pork!

I have taken out these foil covered lumps and cook whatever they are.

Yes you can seperate them into 2s, wrap each 2 in clingfilm and the I'd pop them all in a freezer bag. Then when the time comes you just get out 2 to defrost. It's not ideal just to use cling film when freezing food so buy a few freezer bags and plastic clips, you can pick them up cheap in discount stores.

October WHICH magazine reported that Sainsbury Butchers Choice has 72% meat, Richmond Thick has 42% and Walls Thick 61%.
The chart also showed Sainsbury Butchers Choice was the cheapest and also mentioned that frozen sausages with comparable meat content are cheaper than fresh with the same nutrition.
So the next time I stock up will be from the freezer section OR when Butchers Choice is on offer.
  • Thanks Ken68 thats good to know, but this xmas we tried the Asda gluten free ones that said 97% Pork priced £2 - £2.30 were really nice and cooked well.

Yep completely forgot about freezer bags.

Just to make sure when I label the bags, I write what they are, the quanity, the date I bought them or the date I should eat them by?

or one freezer bag and sausages separated by grease proof paper - saves on bags!!
  • hia, how do you eat your sausages once they are thawed. i buy my sausages in bulk (reduced stickered) and cook them all at once on a wired tray in the oven. once cooked i freeze them in a freezer bag and take out however many I need in the morning we are going to cook them. they are already cooked so only need heated through till pipping hot. I boil them in a gravy with onion to make a sausage and mash dinner or in a very weak gravy mix if i want to pop into a caserole/bake. saves on the energy bill and also time. doing this means i can buy either finest or taste the difference as i know it is not money saving but i am very fussy with meat.

I've got retrieved sausages from my freezer (this time in a thin sandwich bag from a roll) and I'll be having with mash and red cabbage (cabbage from the freezer from last weeks batch book!).

My dh buys maybe 2kg merguez (spicy sausages) at a time. I just separate them all and put on a baking tray. Slip into just a normal supermarket plastic carrier bag. Slip into the freezer and, once frozen, just knock off the tray into the bag and back in the freezer. You can just take out however many you want. If they are all frozen singly, they take a lot less time to defrost than if they are 2 stuck together.
This way, you don't need to faff about with labels even. You just have a bag of sausages in the freezer!

(he points to some plastic cows on the table) are very small; those (pointing at some cows out of the window) are far away...
