My own personal experience with cheap laptops hasn't been good. My experience is that they seem to work fine at first, but aren't robust enough to handle the punishment.
At the moment ebuyer.com have a whole lot of ex-display laptops on sale cheaply. However, buying an ex-display laptop is also a "you pays your money and you takes your chances" thing. But, you can have a look: http://www.ebuyer.com/search?page=1&store=5&cat=10&filterpricebands=[200+TO+499.99]
Before I got my Mac when I was using Windows laptops (often with Linux on them), I had best experiences with Asus laptops. But, this information may be out of date. I note that ebuyer have some Asus laptops on sale ex-display for between £200 and £300, but wouldn't like to claim that these are definitely a good choice.0 -
Dell have this Inspiron 15" Laptop at £299, top end of your budget.
It'll do Internet, word processing and basic computing/photo editing just fine, jsut don't expect it to play games beyond internet browser style games.
Ebuyer have a Fujitsu for £330 with slightly better spec.
Laptops are highly competetive. You generally do get what you pay for. Keep an eye out on ebuyer or hotdeals uk for rated laptop deals. Avoid supermarket specials - they tend to be out of date and use nasty screens and keyboards to keep costs right down. Stick with Asus, Dell, Lenovo, TOshiba, even HP as they tend to be a bit better.0 -

I have an Asus netbook which I bought early this year. I took a chance after reading the reviews on Amazon - I hadn't heard of the make before so was a bit wary. It's great, haven't had a single problem with it and I'd definitely stick with the brand.0 -
last year I bought brand new laptop Emachines, bought from asda on christmas sale, paid £197.0
