Hi all, advice needed based on my circumstances please

Options
Hi all :)

I'm a new poster on this board so please go easy on me :) I'm currently in quite a bit of debt (£21k) and have whittled down my outgoings to the bare necessesities, but I'm still struggling so I need to raise some extra cash.

So far I have sold my old mobile to Mazuma and have made a list of some items to sell on ebay, which should hopefully earn me a couple of hundred. However, I'm looking for something a bit more regular but as I work long hours it would need to be flexible and based around my time at home. I would be grateful for any ideas as to where to start, as I am completely new to all this and somewhat perplexed by all the threads. In order to narrow it down a little, here are my current circumstances:

Work: 37.5hrs per week plus 2hrs travel time per day, working in public sector with offenders

Qualifications:
11 GCSEs (A*-B)
5 A-Levels (AAAAB - English, Psychology, Biology, Religious Studies, General Studies)
BSc (Hons) Psychology
BA (Hons) Criminal Justice
Almost completed MSc Forensic Psychology & Criminology

Skills/Interests
Excellent English skills
Involved in amateur theatre group
Music
Psychology/Philosophy/Criminal Justice

Availability
Evenings - 6:30pm onwards
Weekends

Ideally, something like proof-reading, writing or tutoring would be good - something that I would find interesting would obviously be a bonus and hopefully feel less like work! However, I am willing to do ANYTHING to make some extra cash, including Avon/Betterware etc.

If anyone has any good advice on where to start, it would be much appreciated :)

Thanks xx

Look at all the threads on this board about making extra cash and remember that based on the number of posters asking virtually the same question, there are a lot of people looking for the same opportunity.

  • Well, thank you for the helpful reply :-/ I have looked at a lot of threads already - some are straightforward but others confuse the hell out of me. Seeing as there are 374 pages worth of threads and no handy starters guide, I was hoping people would be willing to offer some advice (that's what I thought these boards were for?) just by pointing me in the right direction. Never mind, I'll just go back to wading through the treacle...

tutoring might be a good option for you - if you have a decent web connection, you go do it on-line via skype, there are a number of agencies out there if you google them.
  • Hi there!

I can only do evenings so I currently work a few hours in the local supermarket - a couple of hours a night can add up quickly!

Local pub work would also be good - not too late a finish like bar work but good steady stream of income.

I do direct sales and I love it but it is alot of hard work and does take me some time during the day - I would say avoid anything that involves delivering catalogues - its soul breaking work (IMHO - don't get offended anyone!).

Have you thought about evening work with young offenders? I used to work at a youth club nearby which was just for young offenders - had a great time!

There is alot to take in on the boards - it took me ages but I have found some really good information but you do need a good pair of wellies for trawling through it all!

Good luck hon!! If you need a friendly shoulder/ear give me a shout!

Most of the advice that will be offered has already been posted under threads which start along the lines of "I need to make some extra cash...."

There are also specific threads on Kleeneze, Betterware, Avon, Wikaniko,, tutoring, making/selling jewellery/crafts, matched betting, blogging, survey sites etc. These threads are all worth reading, and if there's anything you want explaining, ask on that thread.

    Hi Daisy :)
If you read my posts I have tried many things - all have been good experiences :) Currently I work 32 and a half hours a week in a special needs school - love it but the pay is dire. I have re-joined Kleeneze, they have kits you can buy but they also have an option in which you can join for free as a taster to see if it's for you so nothing to lose. They are also introducing party plan in the new year so there is something for everyone :)
Like you I only have evenings and weekends available and so far I am very happy in what I have achieved.
Have a look around at as many threads as you can - there are tons of good opportunities out there and you should find the one that suits you :)
    Good luck,
    Jenny x
P.s. Happy New Year all :)

Try your local college of FE. I would suggest sending in a CV and perhaps securing a few hours per week lecturing. Many mature students work during the day so require taught sessions in the evenings.

I sent my CV in 'blind' to my local college and within a week was teaching 4 evening sessions, within a month I was there practically full-time and stayed for over 2 years. I understand you can't lecture during office hours but there are many working adults who require taught sessions during evenings only.

What about private tutoring? I did this to help a few friends out initially, now I see 3 - 4 private pupils per week. Most of the school age pupils I see are requesting help with maths (GCSE) but I'm sure there would be those seeking help with other subjects.

Both of the above work out at about £20 - 25ph.
