I'm really confused
I have mid brown hair, but for years I dyed it dark brown. Haven't dyed it for about a year or so, so I have a subtle difference between the 4 inches or so closest to my roots and the ends of my hair. I also seem to have more and more greys coming through every day
I'd like to funk my hair up a bit and have an appointment next week. Ideally I want some pinky purply highlights, but I think I need the rest of my hair to be darker first. So, my questions:
If I dye my hair dark brown again, will my hairdresser be able to bleach highlights and then apply permanent colour over the top?
If I dye my hair dark brown, should I use permanent or semi permanent colour?
Will semi permanent colour take better over bleach than permanent? I want to make the colour last as long as possible. Don't want it washing out after a week!

I would just leave it to your hairdresser. Could you go in for a consultation before your appointment to explain what you want to do?
Purple-pink highlights may look a bit extreme so be open to suggestionsYou could always have all your hair dyed a more red brown and some purpley shimmer or very fine purple-red high lights.

Thanks. I definitely want to have the extreme effect (don't worry - about 10 years ago my hair was bright blue
). I've been wearing clip in extensions the past few weeks in hot pink and really liked the effect.
Would have to make a 40 mile round trip to see hairdresser, and doubt I can fit that in before next week now. Perhaps I'll phone her.Science adjusts its views based on what's observed.

Personally I'd self-colour it brown and stick with the clip-ins.
If you don't like the pink/red colour or get fed up with them then it will be a !!!!!! to keep them hidden under a brown dye.
Mine was bum length and I used to dye it dark red then I decided I wanted brown with red shots...I had to return to the hairdresser every 4 weeks to get another brown dye to mask the red that keep peeping through.

Spoke to my hairdresser. She says no problem with any of it. Woo hoo!
Definitely want the purple highlights - the clip in things are a pain (literally) when you have an 18 month old, very grabby son!!Science adjusts its views based on what's observed.

Hello
I'm no colourist but heres my story - I have naturally dark blonde hair which I used to have bleached to quite a light blonde, which tbh never looked good and always had that gold/orange tinge to it.
About 6 months ago I bit the bullet and decided to go dark, first 2 times my hairdresser did it and she used just a semi permanent, at first it didnt hold for very long before fading - probably about 4 weeks at the most.
After that I have been dying it myself with Superdrug own brand semi permanents, and its fab. It looks no different to when the hairdresser does it and she even gave me some tips on how to do it.
I think semi permanents are better as they are far less damaging to the hair, especially if you want to add some extreme colour
And its cheaper too!
Good luck xxxLittle Man born 11 March 2012 :smileyhea

If you want extreme colour, the best option is to dye the majority of the hair in the base colour (I have deep purple, or 5/99 for your colourist, although you could go for a 9/998, which is quite a vivid purple, no need for bleaching beforehand. At the same time get her to weave out highlights or slices, which she can then bleach. Next to get the most vivid colour (I have pink) you will need a true semi (not a shop bought one, they are actually quasi's) and once your bleach is cooked, she can use the semi to colour it for you. The only down side is that you will need the semi reapplied every 1 - 2 weeks because they wash out quite quickly, although if you have a friend this is something you can do yourself at home.Starting weight 17st 4lb - weight now 15st 2lbs
