how to recyle kids clothes?

I am a mother of a 3 yr old girl and 6mth old boy , I kept all my daughter clothes incase our second child was a girl and as we have a beautiful son I am left with a load of clothes. The kids stuff is now filling the attic. My husband suggested a link up with someone who has an older girl and baby boy and do a kind of clothes swap? Does anyone think this is a daft idea? I have never bought second hand but as our stuff has little wear I guess most people are the same. My old stuff goes to charity shops but I,m a bit sentimenal about the kids things and want them to go to a good home. Any ideas?

  • Perhaps this isn't what you are looking for but the likes of Tesco & Asda's usually have recycling points at their stores and some are for Oxfam or Barnardos etc and accept clothing.

Though the swap sounds a decent idea for both parties.

LOL I just read the first few words of your post and thought you've got the same problem as me except I have a 4yr old boy and a six month old girl. I pass the girls stuff on to my sister who it comes from (she's just about to have another girl ) and used to pass the boys stuff onto a friend with a younger boy but then just recently her boy shot up and now my boys clothes are homeless.

I find it a real hassle as I hate binning them but I like to know they are going to someone who will use them. I'll probably have to do freecycle next time - it annoys me how much charity shops charge these days so avoid them

Your husbands idea is great in theory but you need someone very close to aviod huge post costs! And your tyastes could be VERY different.

  • Hi

Don't know where you live but in finaghy there is a shop called "weecycle" - children's' recycling boutique. They sell recycled new and gently used children's' clothing, toys and equipment. Hope this helps.

Are you part of a toddler group/close to a children's centre etc. It would be ideal to link in with them to see if they can hold a clothes swap. I saw one advertised near us where you paid £5 entry fee which went to charity - and you brought 10 items to swap for...another 10 items. you could do a variation on this?
  • This is so weird I have been just thinking about doing a clothes swap event and charging admission. The Royal Hospital are trying to raise funds for an MRI scanner for the childrens hospital and thought it was a really good cause. Was thinking of giving everyone credits for the items they bring as some things are worth more than others. Haven't orgainized an event like this so will have to look into venues...maybe a church hall? All ideas/advice gratefully received....funny how things snowball eh?!

  • Well have had a quick look and it seems I cud hire a hall for under £20 from the council. The Royal Hospital MRI fund for the kids is standing at £590,000.00they need to reach £2million! Its the only childrens hospital in the UK not to have a scanner. Balling my eyes out reading the words from some donors who have given as their children have been treated there and I think of my own wee son who is due an op there next year. Going to try and do something...will keep you all posted...I wonder is there a moneyfundraisingexpert website?wil look!
