Bottom Dentures

Will I ever be able to chew without "discomfort"? How is it supposed to fit? How is it supposed to feel? I have tried Fixodent, Poligrip and SeaBond - no matter which I have used, the plate only feels securely placed for a couple of hours or so, unless I eat something or talk too much. If I talk much, I feel it loosen up, like there are air pockets under the plate all of a sudden. If I eat, the plate feels like there are springs under it - like it is bouncing on a cushion. Food immediately attached itself to the edges and if I chew wrong or move my tongue too much, the plate "pops loose. HELP

Full lower dentures are a nightmare. Most people will not have a set that stays put as there is so little gum to hold them in. For some people the jaw bone resorbs alot once their own teeth have been removed. Polygrip etc doesn't work at all well on lower dentures as there is so little gum , the tongue and saliva washes the stuff out.
People only wear lower dentures successfully because their muscles etc adapt and they adapt the way they eat . It's like riding a bicycle , it takes practice.
Some people never adapt and either go without lower dentures or just use them for looks and eat without the dentures in .
If a well fitting set is fitted and there are still problems the only solution , which is not available on the nhs, is implants to anchor the dentures in. Not everyone is suitable as you need enough bone , not to be taking certain medications and preferably not a smoker. The cost for the implants and denture, depending on type, would be £2000 upwards.0 -

Is this your first full lower set?
As Brook said, it's all down to practise. The lower denture will not 'adapt' to the way you talk and eat. It's only a bit of plastic. It will never behave just like your own teeth.
You need to adapt how you eat and talk to suit the denture.
One problem we have nowadays is that people who require dentures are generally much older than they used to be.
Stories like "My grandad had all his teeth out at 21" or "My Mum lost all her teeth at 18" just don't happen any more.
But - the thing is, young people are much more adaptable. Look at the huge bits of plastic kids have to get on with in the name of braces. It can be done with a bit of determination.
Once you accept that they will never feel like 'teeth' and that eating and talking with them is a skill you have to practise and develop, then the process of getting used to them will be a bit easier. How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -
