I know what you mean about the baking products as i bake a lot too. I also find myself lured in by the BOGOF's, 1/2 teabags thats why i started to go back in. I thought i would go in and just buy these products to save the pennies but slowly but surely i found myself buying all my shopping there even clothes and stationary until the only shop i went in was Tesco. This is why i'm thinking would it be better to just try and go cold turkey.

Sorry i did'nt realise there was another thread, how did Cooltrick get on with it?

I could easily forget that supermarkets exist if my DS and DD did not live with me - but at the rate they eat cheese, frozen pizzas and all the things that cost so much less in supermarkets than in individual shops, if I did not frequent Mr S at least occasionally I would go bankrupt!

Having said that, all my veg come from a veg box (with the exception of occasional salad bags from M&S when I am in a real hurry), fruit from either the box or the farmers' market, staples of grain, pulses, tomato tins, soya milk and laundry products from a bulk wholefood buy.

I know that once the kids move out DH and I will be able to live on very little, I can see it with a couple of friends, their kids have moved out, the husband retired from work and tehy live very frugally and very happily!

There are loads of things you simply cant get outside of a supermarket, buy them there.

Buy the rest locally, where is is usally much cheaper. IE dont pay the tesco 50% egg tax etc

What's this? Just out of curiosity, as I try to avoid Tesco like the plague (same with ASDA).

    Thanks

Local producer of free range eggs

    £1 at local butcher/greengrocer
    £1.57 at Tescos

i have been thinking over the last few days again about why the heck did i start using the supermarkets again:rolleyes: it is soooo easy to fall back into using them, because of the offers on tv etc..

but i must admit i dont use the big supermarkets like i used to, i try to use lidl for as much of the dry stuff as poss...

might sit down this afternoon and re- read through the thread...

and get myself back into not using supermarkets again:D

mainly because of the credit crunch too, as there is going to be sooooooo many little small businesses, corner shops etc going to the wall this year..which you dont realise the knock on effect that one little shop closing can have..
Work to live= not live to work

Good luck to all of you who will not use a supermarket, I shall read this thread with great interest.

I am not joining this challenge because it is a bit of a lost cause for me at the moment, while I have to cater for the rest of the family. Also I have a few "£5 off a £25 shop" vouchers from M&S and am going to use those for the stuff that I would normally buy in Mr S.

I don't know why but I have a feeling that M&S are less unethical than other supermarkets (am I under an illusion?).

Good luck with your challenge! I might give it a try in February once the vouchers are no longer valid.
