thriftlady wrote:I like this idea, but where can I get baking supplies ? My farmshop sells flour, but it is horrendously expensive stuff from an organic mill. What about sugar, baking powder, oils etc / The only shop I can think of that sells these is an expensive deli, and it only carries small bags of flour and sugar. I'm not sure it is possible to avoid supermarkets entirely and save money at the same time.
How about doing an online shop just for flour, sugar, baking powder and dried fruit etc and then trying to go for a month without visiting the supermarket? I might join in - I am just trying to work out how I might do it. We have a nice well priced grocers near to me which sells longley farm dairy prodcue (yummy and reasonably priced), nice hm bread and meat and cold meat, and there is a home and bargain not too far away where I could get all my cleaning supplies. The only thing I would struggle for is petfood as our scottie dog only has pedigree pouches and these are very expensive in local shops, if you can even get them, so I might have to add those to the basic shop before I start. I am firmly convinced that I am a trolley addict because I just love sauntering around the supermarket looking at all the stuff and always impulse buy to a very embarassing extent. So yes, I'm in, though how successful I will be I don't know!Jane

Hi, good luck to you. I started a thread the other day about not needing to go to Mr T's anymore and several people agree that they were fed up with them. It wasn't really a decision not to go to the supermarket, more a case of deciding to shop local and finding that we no longer needed the supermarket. My DH goes on Tuesday and he has just told me he only spent £8.47 today so we're getting there.
I think we are ready to go for it!
The thread was called 'I've finally kicked the habit - Bye Bye Mr T ' - sorry I can't do links yet.

That's how I've decided to do it Looby-loo, I just want to see how little I actually need to buy from a supermarket, purely out of interest to let me see how a supermarket is purely for "convenience" rather than quality or price.0

hi... it was your thread and the outbreak of the bird flu in the intensive farmed turkeys.. destined for the supermarkets that inspired me to try.......Work to live= not live to work0 -
Hi, so what about shops like Wilko for washing up liquid, loo roll etc? The one near me is bigger than a local supermarket so does that cont as a 'supermarket'? If it does then where to go for loo roll? Village shop is very expensive but I do save the petrol - must have a think about some things:rolleyes:Doing voluntary work overseas for as long as it takes .......

Your thread, you make the rules
.
This has got me thinking about me doing this. I live in a large market town with a big market 3 times a week. I have a post office, bakers, newsagents and shop that sells cards and stationary in village and a farm shop in next village. I could definately do more than I currently do.0
