Any point to shopping in the sales? Have they started?

I always thought of the sales as starting in January....I usually always miss them...
But then I've managed to get a good deal by shopping around or waiting for the new year's model...and buying the previous years just after release...
Graco pram - new colours in Jan -bought the previous years colour in feb/mar -
Bosch - released their new models in April - bought previous years models (little if any difference in spec) May/Jun - this saved me a good few hundred pounds on a new washing machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher and oven....
This year I felt more organised and thought I'd check out the sales - I want to buy a good carpet washer, a new laptop and a tow bar cycle carrier....
Looking in the sales/online -one Vax (recommended by Which) is about half rrp from a couple of retailers...a bargain - but looking at one of the price comparison sites that shows price history - it has been the same price for most of this year - with a 2 month price spike a couple of months ago....
I'm trying to get the cycle carrier I want second hand anyway - but new it £140 with 10% off now in Halfords but it has been £120 on Tesco direct ..
Seems little point in 'panic' buying in sales...am I wrong????
