can get cheap acer lappies for that money at tesco/ebuyer.
come with a voucher to upgrade to vista, which is probably better than having vista itself - you'll be able to wait a while for them to iron out some of the bugs before upgrading.0 -
TO be honest Vista will not run very well on a £400 laptop. Either stick to Windows XP or save up a bit more and up your budget to at least £5000

how about this http://www.comet.co.uk/cometbrowse/product.do?sku=373222
I don't think you'l have any problems with vista on this. Ideally you'd want 1GB of RAM but you'd probably have to sacrifice some hard disk space if spending £400.
This laptop if £50 more expensive on the comet website so may possibly be a misprice as they are the same company.
Go through quidco for cashback to reduce effective price further

Ebuyer have one for a shade under £400 with a free Vista business upgrade. http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=25044051013&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=117785
I have the Centrino version of this and it is great - the unit above has the AMD processor equivalent so should be very similar - price is great (especially with the Vista upgrade) however I would stick to XP for a Laptop - certainly for the time being!!0 -

Thats the best laptop for £400.000 -
Actually the Sempron is AMD's answers to the Celeron (but better)...the Turion is AMD's answer to the Centrino and so THIS is the best notebook for £400 (£390 even)...Acer Aspire 50510

thanks for that, frogman - saved me having to say it

I have that acer and it's cool. Would've kinda liked XP pro, but MCE is actually wicked.0 -
Dab's have some and you can get up to 3% cashback via quidco0

take a look on stock clearance lists... my last laptop (ooh, about 6 months ago) was an ibm thinkpad with a 2ghz centrino setup, 1gb ram, dl dvd rewriter, bluetooth, wireless and a 15" hi res (1400x1050) screen. it was ~£500 (£300 off) because it was an open box, and the power supply was missing. A replacement power supply was £11 from the same clearance list, and the docking station (normally £120 ish) was £27. I forget why..0
