How do Bank Holidays work if you are off anyway?

Hi, My shift is Tuesday - Saturday . This Year as you all know christmas is on a sunday and boxing day is a monday. (my two days off work) .

Yesturday in work i was told that bank holidays follow on to the next day(s). so for instance my bank holiday will be on tuesday and wednesday , i was told this from a member of staff not my supervisor . so i am not 100% sure if it works this way.

So this week should i start my week on Thursday? 29th Dec..

Does this sound familiar to anyone? thanks

any Merry Christmas to all :)

  • It really depends on how your leave is worded. It could be [for example] 28 days including bank hols, in which case you would go back on Tuesday unless you have booked the days off. Or it could be [for example] 20 days plus bank holidays in which case you would have days in lieu...but I'd check with your supervisor as the last thing you need is to not turn up when they are expecting you.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

I work Tuesday to Saturday and we are just given extra days holiday to take at any time throughout the year for all the bank holidays.

However im sure every company will have there own policy.

  • You see, I am agency. Ive just spoke to my mate who works Mon-Fri with the same agency,

His bankholidays is Monday 26th and Tuesday 27th and goes back into work on Wednesday 28th.

Surely that would mean I miss out on a days bank holiday if I start on Wednesday? Wednesday should be my substutute bankholiday day?

Problem ive got is am on permanent 6-2 and how can i contact work before i start work ? .. haha! ive been their 2 months so...

I did not think that policy applied if you was agency staff.

It's astomishing how those bank holidays just sneak up on people, isn't it? Utterly no warning at all and then it's Christmas :) So you couldn't possibly have asked last week, say?....

I am afraid that nobody here can tell you what the practice of your agency / hirer is.
  • What sort of work do you do?

The actual bank holidays are Monday and Tuesday. Is the type of work you do something which is a 7-days a week operation?

Hi, Am a stock controller , The Girl who told me also a stock controller works same shift patterm 6-2 perm and tue-sat. she is off till thursday.. :/

but she is full time whereas am agency.
  • Did you not think to ask 'when am I next in then?' before you left your last shift?

So she will be on different terms to you. Agency don't get paid bank holidays if they're off unless they take it out of their holiday allowance which usually has to be requested.

You are employed by the agency, not at the place you're doing the work.
  • Turn up for work on Wednesday. That's a normal working day for you and not a bank holiday.

Then find out when your holiday year runs from - probably the first day of your first ever assignment with the agency - and ensure you have accrued holiday at the rate of 12.07% of time worked. Finally, ensure you take holiday to cover that time.
