Why the baby boomers shouldn't feel guilty

Fear not. There is balance and karma, because in a far flung location an opposite complaint is being levelled.
Right now the Chinese forums will be awash with the young generation (let's call them Generation Cash) complaining how the previous post-war generation (Generation Mao) held their society back.
How very true this is.
I do however think its sad when UK generations have such negative views about other generations. I know this is a generalisation but in my experience there are many more bitter and twisted views emerging (as on this thread). During my life I have always tried to help those older or younger than me. It was quite a shock to me to learn how some people resent the wealth, housing, pensions of those older than them; and also how some older people see younger people as wanting an easy life and not being able to work hard or save like they did. None of this is constructive and its in danger of undermining our society which an increasing number of people of all ages do not believe in, having developed very selfish attitudes.Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -
I have thought about it but I thought it would be better for the people who move when I do sell up and downsize.
I would do it now and enjoy the saving/spending might even pay for a small cruise each year - just keeping to the water theme;)"If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....
"big business is parasitic, like a mosquito, whereas I prefer the lighter touch, like that of a butterfly. "A butterfly can suck honey from the flower without damaging it," "Arunachalam Muruganantham0 -

Some of the opinions spouted in this thread are bizzare. Do some people really believe that just because you reach a certain age you should then lose an asset you worked hard to pay for? In my parents case they extended their home to meet the needs of their growing family with my dad doing alot of the work himself. Yes his home is larger than mine and yes he has a significantly nicer car than I do but when he was 30 he drove an Austin Princess.MF aim 10th December 2020 :j:eek:MFW 2012 no86 OP 0/2000

I'm not sure where these people get the impression that all baby boomers live in 5 bed houses.
Nor me. I have a two-bedroom-and loft-room terraced house on the edge of a cituy in the Midlands.
We also bought a small house in Spain with the proceeds of a small inheritance from my husband's mother (the generation before the Baby Boomers!) who had bought her bunglaow from the Council. We were lucky we had this. The Spanish house sale is proceeding at the moment, should be complete in January (fingers crossed), but we will not make a profit on this, nor did we expect to.
We have one fourteen-year-old car which has done 193,000 miles. We will keep her until she runs no more. We do not change our cars just because they are two years old. Maybe that is why we appear to have more assetts than others - we do not want bigger and better all the time.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

This whole concept of people being "guilty" or not is just wrong.
Anyone in any situation does what seems to offer them the best deal at the time.
It is not some longterm plan by people of one generation to deliberately damage another.
When people bought houses that subsequently rocketed in value, they did not either know that this would happen, nor did they individually cause it to do so.
Everyone has the absolute right to the best they can for themselves and their families.0 -

If the property is in some regions particularly in the Southern half of the country they may be forced to have a meter anyway so I wouldn't worry about it, and do whatever you can to keep your bills down.
I was suppose to have a water meter fitted when I moved in as it was mandatory. Luckily for me my property isn't suitable for a meter.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

I hope this forum is still going in 30 years. I would love to revist this and see how all the complaining 20 and 30-somethings on this thread are getting on.0

I am a baby boomer and am now feeling very hard done by as I do not have a 5 bed house and an enormous pension. Who can I complain to as surely I am entitled?0

Complain to the pre-war and war baby generation. Those that are alive that is.
