When charging my netbook from flat, its red LED flashes red for a couple of minutes before changing to a continuous red. (this is while it is turned off).
Now, however, the red light won't come on at all unless I start the machine. It then starts to flash as Windows is loading, but then shuts down......due to the battery being flat! I have no other charger to test it with.

You do not state the model, so the following is for
    ASUS Eee PC 901 1000 1000(H)

If the computer runs when the charger is connected, then there is nothing wrong with the computer, the battery has had it, the charger is also designed to run the computer as well as charging the battery.

Plenty around for these, I have bought off ebay with no problems, I think this is where I got the last one, we have 3 EEE in the family.

before forking out, take tha battery out, disconnect charger, press the power button down for 40-50 seconds, then plug in charger only, and start up. Once it's booted fully, shut down as normal. Then put battery back in, plug in charger, and try turning on normally....it may/may not work, if not as above the battery has probably had it.
    ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D
  • It's a 1001PX. I had this problem a few weeks ago, so I took it back to Currys where they charged it for a few minutes from one of their own. It started up OK, and I found my charger would then work. It seems that my charger cannot "start off" the charging process when the battey is flat, i.e. it is not charging during the initial time that it makes the LED flash red.
However, I now find that the machine won't power up at all without the battery in, whereas it used to.
  • So your charger is probably duff and the battery is now flat as it hasn't been charging.

This didn't work, but why would it? Pressing the power button without the battery when there is no mains power isn't likely to do anything, is it?

It would discharge any residual current left in capacitors on the main board.
