CRB check for voluntary work - who pays?

Due to attend an interview for some voluntary work in a couple of weeks and will need a CRB check but I've heard conflicting versions of who foots the bill - anyone know if it's the applicant or the organisation? (In my case the local library.)
Thanks.

At the employers discretion, there isn't a hard and fast rule, however as you're doing them a favour and giving your time and energy I'd say if they want volunteers the least the employer can do is pay for it themselves. Our organisation does, as do charities such as age concern.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Thanks elsien - I hope that happens because although I'm happy to help, I'm not willing, and can't afford to stump up £26 or whatever it costs for the privilege of doing so!

I thought charities didn't have to pay. Isn't there a bit on the form they fill in that states that?

Anyway, the volunteer shouldn't have to pay.

  • The local library won't be a charity, so it is possible that there is a charge for a CRB Disclosure. However, I wouldn't expect a volunteer to pay. Trying to get the LA to pay might be a problem, though - if you are asked to pay, ask to see the volunteer policy.
  • Where I work (charity) volunteers are free of charge, there is a section on the form for the person doing the checking to tick if the applicant is a FOC volunteer.

I didn't think anyone paid for volunteers, regardless of whether it is a charity or not?
I consider myself to be a male feminist. Is that allowed?
  • Volunteers get CRB checks free.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.
  • Update:
Yes indeed, the bill is being footed by 'them;' I should think so too!
    Cheers to everyone who responded.
