Keep getting overpaid!

I have a bit of a situation with my pay and tax which keeps being wrong and I keep getting overpaid - which I wouldn't mind if I know I didn't have to pay it back but obviously I will.

It started off when I was temping earlier in the year through an agency, I was paid weekly but was only paying NI and no tax which I assumed was because I hadn't previously earned anything in the year. None of the other people through the same agency where paying any tax either so I didn't think anything of it.

I was then made permanent at the company I was temping and switched over to monthly pay (paid by them now instead of the agency). I then had notification from the tax office I was on a different tax code because I had 2 jobs, which was a mistake as I had left the agency, so my first months pay was underpaid as they had taxed me too much. I spoke to our payroll department and they said I needed to sort things out with the tax office which I did (or assumed I had)

My following months pay was correct and I paid the correct amount of tax and NI, but didn't receive my over payment of tax back. Again I spoke to payroll and was told to speak to tax office.
I did this and was told I needed a month-1 basis removed from my tax code and was told the following month my overpayment would be repaid.

Month 3 came and this time instead of getting just the over payment back, I got my previous 2 months tax + the overpayment + the current months tax being nil adding almost £450 extra to my salary!

Now Im on Month 4 and this month Ive been overpaid by £100 or so as it says on my payslip that my tax for this month is nil (Im still paying NI)

Payroll tell me to speak to tax office and tax office tell me to speak to payroll so Ive no idea what is going on. On top of this my tax code seems to be correct (same as everyone elses in the office) so I don't really understand.

I know this money isn't mine so Im being careful not to spend it but obviously Im very wary that Im going to be asked to repay it in one go, plus maybe make a further payment for the period where I paid no tax when temping.

Any advice?

Get a P45 from the Agency and give it to your payroll office. I think that should get everything put straight. Unless you have left it too late. but you still need that P45.

hello again! (you've been commenting on my other thread on the rental board) :T

I did have to keep chasing them for this, and I never personally received a copy of it but they did apparently sent it to the tax office, which I assumed they had done because I then received a different tax code.

Payroll did ask me to fill out a P46 and sent that to them, which I did.

Im assuming I still need a P45 in which case.... To be fair the agency I worked for was hopeless, I never heard from again after my initial interview, It was only when I phoned to chase the P45 they said the woman I had previous spoken to had left and they had no real record of me on thier system even though they had been paying me///

The 'tax checker' on HM Revenue and Customs website should calculate whether you've under/overpaid so far - if you stick accurate info in!

Put in all your gross pay and tax to date from APRIL 2011.
Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.

Thanks I just tried it - I don't have the true exact figures but did a fairly accurate calculation - and it seems that actually I don't owe any tax yet this year.... it looks like my earnings so far this year fall just below the taxable threshold so maybe thats why Im not paying tax but I assumed that the tax would be taken off anyway as it would be based on the annual income rather than just how much I have actually earned so far, i didn't think it would be a case of only pay tax once you've earned X amount?
