  • I learnt a long long time ago, never book the last day off as normally, the bosses need to go and get their wives pressies so usually give everyone a free half day on them.

... except for those of us currently sat at our desks waiting for the boss to get BACK with those pressies for his wife so I can wrap them for him! LOL :rotfl:

Really interesting to see everyone's responses. I worked in retail before and we always had to open til said time decided by Head Office so have had no experience of this.
In previous office jobs I have worked a full day to 5 or 6pm so know what you are saying there.

Count yourself lucky, our office manager had to get the gifts, wrap them, and organise spa weekends. But if the wives are happy, the bosses are happy, then we get our Christmas bonus and sent home early.

Last week the works do was on my day off, I went to it everyone else will have been paid for that day. Do I care, no, it's give and take.

It is pretty annoying, I booked this afternoon off not really because I needed it or wanted it but because we have been so busy over the last few months I have not had time to take holiday and had to use it all up by the end of this month. I booked a lot of random days off, including a half day today. Imagine my annoyance to overhear people saying they would be leaving early! Oh well, this is the first job I've had where I didn't need to use up my holiday for Christmas day so I don't feel like I can complain too much :D

My policy is never to book christmas eve off as leave. Everywhere i've ever worked, you get the afternoon off for free and as often as not there is some sort of quiz /buffet/ fun thing going on in the morning and no one does much work anyway!
