Written evidence of this nature would convince a tribunal too! If you can evidence all of this the employer is about ten miles the wrong side of acting lawfully. get everything you can in writing, take copious notes of anything said verbally - and at this stage I don't think I would even bother to hide I was doing it because she isn't going back, she's preparing a legal case. Any verbal conversation you then write to the employer to confirm - "on such and such date at such and such time you said to me this. Please confirm that this is what you said". If they have any sense (which so far I am not convinced of, they will lawyer up fast. Get any evidence in e-mail etc., OUT of the workplace immediately.
I assume she is not in a union (make sure she is next time!), check household insurance - you may have legal cover. Law centres in the area? Otherwise it will be a no-win no-fee lawyer or do it yourself I'm afraid - be aware that the former will take part of the award.0 -

            my employers ended my fixed term contract 3 months into my maternity leave - it was all done via email - while 150 other staff had their contracts extended a year.
Tribunal date in February:p:D (they have admitted unfair dismissal and sex discrimination:D):j:jOur gorgeous baby boy born 2nd May 2011 - 12 days overdue!!:j:j0 -

            yes its a remedies hearing. My solicitor sent them an offer but they rejected it and we havent heard anymore, so I'm assuming it will go to court. I'm terrified of going x:j:jOur gorgeous baby boy born 2nd May 2011 - 12 days overdue!!:j:j0

            a year's salary based on the other member's of staff getting a year extension, a bonus I missed out on in October (would hve got if still employed on mat leave) and my legal fees x:j:jOur gorgeous baby boy born 2nd May 2011 - 12 days overdue!!:j:j0

I can see why the refused the offer tbh, I suspect they believe that they can get this lowered because I presume you would have been staying on maternity pay for a few more months which is cheaper than your salary at a guess.
Surprised they didn't counter offer though!

            I was actually due to go back in November (8 months mat leave) - my hours and days had been agreed with my then manager (again, this was all on email and I had a letter confirming it).
I had to fight to get my mat pay as well (June-Nov) and got it after hassling them (and the first solicitor letter).
I'm a bit gutted its come to a tribunal to be honest - I'm not normally one of those compo types in the slightest - so it will be interesting to see how it pans out.
Its a huge company and I'm sure you'd all laugh if you knew who it was, but possibly not shocked!:j:jOur gorgeous baby boy born 2nd May 2011 - 12 days overdue!!:j:j0
