Oz chronicles the violent life of prisoners inside an experimental cell block in the Oswald Maximum Security Correctional Facility: Level Four called Emerald City. Under unit manager Tim McManus (Terry Kinney, Sleepers, Save The Last Dance) and Warden Leo Glynn (Ernie Hudson, Ghostbusters), the inmates in Emerald City all struggle to fulfil their own needs. Some fight for power; power over the drug trade or power over the other inmate factions. Others want money, either through slinging 'tits' (drugs), gambling or other scams. Others, corrections officers and inmates alike, simply want to survive long enough to make parole or even to see tomorrow…

The first episode introduces audiences to the newest crop of inmates to enter Oz, including Miguel Alvarez (Kirk Acevedo, Band Of Brothers, Law & Order) who is promptly stabbed in the chest while waiting to enter Oz; Tobias Beecher, a naive, pale and hopelessly out of place lawyer accused of killing a little girl while driving intoxicated; Donald Groves, a cannibal who ate his mother (he was saving his father for thanksgiving) and Kareem Said an outspoken and much-respected Muslim leader who tells the warden and McManus upon his arrival that "as of today, I run Oz." One thing is for sure – whoever you are and where ever you’ve come from, everyone will have to fight for their right to stay alive.

Corruption between guards is rife and the prison pecking order is in full display; almost everyone has a group to belong to whether it is the Aryans, Muslims, Gangbangers, Wiseguys or Latinos. Although violence is everywhere, it's the endless, orderly routine that will kill you.

The wheelchair-bound narrator Augustus Hill (Lost, Romeo & Juliet) guides viewers through the brutal prison world of Oz – there's death and deception; anger and fear; love and loyalty; pain and suffering; scandal and regret but in the end, you can’t deny that this is one great prison drama.

Oz: Season 1 gives a no-holds-barred account of prison life with all the plots, subplots and conflicts that exist between prisoners and guards alike. The powerful acting and gritty storylines make this show terrifyingly realistic and full of suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat. A truly great TV series, this is one prison drama everyone should own on DVD.

Oz: Season 1 is available to buy on DVD from Monday, February 5.
