Can employers claim back Training fees?

Hi,
Please can someone tell me can a company/employer claim back fees that they pay to train it's employees, say on training courses/college course, from the tax they pay?

It will be an expense against profits, so will affect their tax liability.
  • There are grants available for SMEs that employ apprentices recently announced by the government, not sure about tax breaks though.

This sounds like a loaded question ?? ......

In answer to your question - no, a company cannot "reclaim" back training fees.

However, generally speaking (as long as the training is "wholly, exclusively and necessarily in the performance of the duties of employment") the costs of training will be used to reduce profits and therefore the tax liability will be reduced.

Ps - what is the real question ? .................
  • Yes in so much that it is offset against tax. So assuming a corporate tax rate of 20% and a course cost of £500, they would pay out £500 but have their tax bill reduced by 20% of that cost, £100 so the "cost" to them would be £400. However if you were a person being asked to repay the course costs you would have to repay the £500 as it would be classed as income they'd have to pay tax on for accounting purposes and they'd have to pay tax on that.

    What brilliant answers. Thank you.

Ps- Not a loaded question, just curious.
