Depends on how big the spud is........ I always scrub them !!!!! them with a fork and just put them on the shelf .. can take anything between one and two hours.... just keep prodding them with a skewer to see if they are done..

I always blitz mine in the microwave for the appropriate time and them bung them in the oven to for 20 mins to crisp up the skin............

I normally MW them for 5 mins then put in a hot oven to crisp up for about 20 mins. Or you can cook from raw for about 1-1.5hrs.

We try and utilise with the oven being on and knock up some biscuits or a cake/flapjacks etc so that we dont just have the oven on for a baked spud.

They are delish crispy. We have most days with various leftovers and other toppings and very healthy too.

If you are doing them in the oven (but NOT the microwave), it decreases the time taken to cook if you thread the potatoes onto metal skewer(s). The metal conducts the heat to the middle of the potato and speeds up cooking. How long they take depends on the size of the potato and the oven temp, but it does no harm if you are unsure to poke them with a sharp knife to see if they are done.

I put mine in for about 1 1/2-2 hours, usually bake them when the oven is on with dinner etc, do a fair few at a time now since I read about someone freezing them. Didn't know about the skewers, I was wanting some for kebabs etc as sick of wasting wooden ones, great tip, thanks :)

I bought a skewer type thing from Morrisons it has handle and 4 spikes and can be folded up. It cost about 99p. The spikes are thick so it does not take that long to cook the potatoes.

  • I wrap mine in foil and put them on 200 for a hour and half , then take the foil off and leave it for 15 minutes to go crispy, that way they are sooo soft inside.

180 degrees C for 1 to 1.5 hours depending on the size of the potato as others have mentioned (always use the metal skewer, saves time and energy :)).
If, like me, you like the skin of the potato, rub it in a little olive oil and sprinkle with salt. The salt draws the moisture out of the potato and leaves the skin even crispier.

I nuke mine until soft and then pop in the oven for 30 mins to crisp off. I also like to make Hasslebacks.

    Here's how (if you're interested)

Peel one very large white potato.

Nuke in a covered dish with a little water until just soft.

Insert a metal skewer horizontally half way down the potato.

With a sharp knife finely slice into the top of the potato as far as the skewer.

Turn the potato 90 degrees and repeat.

Drizzle with olive oil, grated cheese and cracked black pepper and bake at 220 c for 30 mins until crispy and crunchy.

They are delish mid week with a green salad and crispy bacon or as a fancy alternative to roast tatties when entertaining. HTH

not too keen on jacket spuds so what i do is blitze them in the microwave then scrape out the insides and make nice creamy mash and the skin get brushed with olive oil and put in the oven to crisp up.

    yummy.
