Hi there, first of all, please don't start with all the "Oh don't get credit blah blah, you will get into debt and you won't pay it off ect" If you can help me/give me advice that that's great - It's the reason why i posted this thread.
So i turned 18 yesterday, and I'm looking to build my credit rating.
So i applied for a phone contract - £25 a month with Orange but i was rejected. No reason given.
I'm kind of a little worried of applying for anything else as anything you apply for it does leave a footprint on your credit file.
I do try and get my credit report both with callcredit and credit expert but both having issues in getting my credit report - probably due to me just turning 18. Nothing on file.
thanks

you'll struggle until you are on the electoral roll. I would start there.Debt free 4th April 2007.
New house. Bigger mortgage. MFWB after I have my buffer cash in place.0 -
Thanks for you're reply emmzi, i was thinking that myself.0

Try taking out a storecard, buy something on it, then phone up and pay it. That's what I did when I turned 18 before getting my phone contract.0

Dont apply for anything else until you are on the electoral Reg.0

I had a rough credit history and applied for an Orange contract last year, I got rejected then applied for the same one through Vodafone and got accepted instantly.
It may be worth trying with another company (Dont try T-mobile as Orange and them are the same company), but I agree getting on the electoral roll would be the biggest boost you can do.
Also do you have any Current Accounts open? If not try opening 1 or 2 of them as they report to the credit agencies providing you keep a balance in them.0 -

thanks for the advice. I don't think i have a current account?
I'm only with HSBC and opened that account September last year0 -
so a good plan will be
- electoral roll 9that will take a few months so you'll need to cool your heels)
- apply to own bank for an account with a debit card
- apply for phone contract
- few months later, apply for catalogue account
- few months later, apply for credit card
Then for the love of all things STOP that's enough to establish a credit history and enough credit lines to be going on with until mortgage time!Debt free 4th April 2007.

I got rejected for an Orange phone contract but then instantly accepted for two contracts with T-Mobile!0

There was something in the news about mobile phone companies not giving contracts to people who've rushed out on the 18th birthday to buy expensive iphones and the like.
If you think about it, it is financial suicide for them as most 18 year olds will want another phone the week after LOL"We want the finest wines available to humanity, we want them here, and we want them now!"0 -
Youve only just turned 18, wait a bit, and then re apply.
