in Cutting tax
Hi all in tha last. Month I have just been notified by hmrc that some one was born in same day as me with the same name has been issued with the same national insurance as I have.
And this has just come about because that th other person has just started work and has been getting charged for student loan but she has never been a student and also receiving tax credits as I have just had a baby.
And had complained to local mp since then I have had to attend identity interview at hmrc for hem to issue me new nic number my concern is that I have worked part time while at university and have worked since I graduated and paid for student loan repayments but they have never received .
I noticed something was odd as every tax year I get my student loan statement saying that I have made no repayments when clearly on my paye slips I have and so every year I have had to fax all my payslips to show I have been repaying it.
I have just received nic statements for most jobs I have had to see how much nic I have paid . And they are all wrong according to my payslips and p60 I have paid probably 4 times as much as what they say .
I don't know where I stand as if my nic is wrong my tax is probably wrong if I have had a rebate who has been getting it . They say that all my records will be passed to my new nic number but I don't think they can get this right it's been 15 years of payments I have made to them .
Has this happend to anyone else and I though ni numbers are unique how can some one have same number to 2 different addresses

Not exactly the same thing. But I had a client who had the same surname as an accountancy partner in the Midlands - 200 miles away! - whose tax records were mixed up. So my client was getting big bills. As he is long term mentally ill, his brother has power of attorney. His brother came to me after 18 months of hell and after a further 12 months and a Complaint Case they finally admitted the fault lay totally with them and compensated my client for the extra costs he'd incurred. To any normal person this whole matter could have been sorted out within weeks, not two and a half years, not in the wacky world of HMRC. My favourite conversation - about 8 months into my 12 months with it:
Me: At no stage has anyone in HMRC taken any personal responsibility to take action to sort out this case.
HMRC guy: That's not fair. I've taken personal responsibility for it.
Me: Great, so what have you done?
HMRC : I've passed it on to Nancy Thumb-twiddler of the Timbuctoo office.
Me: Ah so in HMRC's world, taking personal responsibility is what anyone else calls passing the buck....
Good luck. Persevere. Don't give up. Take notes, names, dates, times, and tax offices of all calls you make. Go public if you have to. Keep your sense of humour, read "The Castle" by Franz Kafka, "Cancer Ward" by Solzenitsyn or other books about unbelievable jobsworths. In the end this is a democracy and not a totalitarian state and if these people think they are personally exposed they can be made to act and sort this out.Hideous Muddles from Right Charlies0 -

Brilliant - made me laugh even though it is serious0 -

Curious to have 2 x similar posts on the same day?

Whatever. As it's now been picked up you need to give HMRC a bit of time to update the NIC side. If you're not confident that's been done accurately then enlisting the help of the NI office might be beneficial? They should have full detail on the NI computer records :

Unlikely - unless 'she' was working in the same company. PAYE doesn't work exclusively off the NINO.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Lucky I have most of my payslips to prove how wrong they are . My worry is this might affect me in later life ie pension etc0

Ie for tax year 2008 to 09 nic say I have paid £70 for that tax year according to my p 60 and my payslips it says I paid £1837.360

Is that HMRC no longer have individual caseworkers ! - post or phonecalls that are inbound are distributed randomly and sadly the quality of the person who deals with it varies markedly from those who DO want to help to those who dont - and this is the work management brought in by SENIOR Management who have`nt worked a case in years. Not exactly the same thing. The same National Insurance number has been used by both of you, annoying but not a great problem to resolve.
Firstly one of the two of you should have a different NI number - unless you weren't allocated one in the first place, which is most unlikely as NI numbers have been allocated for several years now when Child Benefit is claimed. However as your problem is now 15 years old it may be you were not given a NI number when you reached 16 years of age. Did your parents get Child Benefit, where you in care or abroad. If so that would explain the reason you did not get a NI number.
This problem usually occurs because someone didn't know their NI number when they claimed benefit, started work etc..... Whoever traced the National Insurance number for the benefit claim, P46 check etc got it wrong. In your case is you had no previous NI number when that person made the trace check they should have crossed referenced your address history to ensure the NI given to you was correct.
Usually mistakes are quickly spotted. However sometimes they get missed and are more difficult to resolve.0 -
I have had my national insurance number since I was 16 . I have never worked abroad or left the country for long period of time . When I been doing my a levels had a part time job and also when at university . And have worked ever since I graduated full time . I am now on maternity leave .and this also has also had an affect on child tax credits etc.
I have got a list from hmrc for total nic contributions I have paid to them and they are all wrong.
Some years they say I have not paid anything but I have. I have most of my payslips to prove what I have paid . But what would of happend if I did not have them .
My next step is to get total tax I have paid to hmrc to see if it the same to what I have actually have paid .
My student loan repayment every tax year they say I have not made any repayments when I have so I have to prove to them I have been repaying . Where does all this money ? Who is getting my nic payments and probably tax .
Do they not know how much people pay in contributions as clearly they say I have paid less to what I have actually been paying0 -

Aren't you stating the fairly obvious if you know you shared NI numbers with someone else?
Each year your employer send details of your NI deductions on a P14 (P60 equivalent) to HMRC. The NI element is extracted and sent to the NIC office where it's logged under your NINO. For most - that works well. Where the NINO is shared - obviously not so well.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0
