Fresh duck 2.5kg £5

Called into ASDA today, they are selling fresh whole duck at £5 each. Thats good value, believe me. The size varies - it's a flat price per bird not weight.

A Chinese couple bought loads, I was lucky to pick one up before they put them all in their trolley.

  • A whole duck usually costs around £7 but you only get a small amount of breast meat and the legs, on the Asda ones they probably have little meat on. If you want to get some nice duck without turning into a butcher, my local Sainsbury does taste the difference duck legs (2 per pack) usually on two packs for £4/£5 which would be nationwide. Quick and easy duck and chips ;)

I have 2 Sainsbury's Taste The Difference Gressingham Ducks in the freezer, 2.25 kg each, original price £19 each but £4 each on a whoopsie.

Plenty of meat on those bad boys !

The ASDA offer is very good, but the Sainsbury's Taste the Difference on half price is a better quality duck. The ASDA ones tend to be more fatty. The leading frozen brand Cherry Valley have their ducks on a water type treadmill (the water runs against them so they have to waddle along) to ensure they are more lean.

In general, its a good thing that Chinese people buy lots of whole duck - its become less feasible to sell in supermarkets. Whilst western taste has changed to eat more duck, they tend to like specific cuts like the breast or leg in small manageable chunks and other than Xmas rarely roast a whole duck.

It's rare to see whole ducks available fresh all year round. Sainsbury's has it spot on by buying in bulk and making it half price a few times a year!
