i have had a letter from inland rev stating i owe £1900 from 2010-2011 how can this just happen, i am an ordinary joe public working for an employer the same one for 40 years or so and have never dealt with my own tax. i did take early retirement in may 2010 and carried on working 16hrs per week for my employer , but isnt it the responesibilty of pension providers and employers to tell inland rev, and deal with tax as i never have and wouldn't have a clue :(. any advice?

Can you post some figures? Did you, by any chance, start to receive any other income from May 2010?

Your responsibility to tell HMRC if you continued working and started to draw a pension. Unless the pension was added via payroll - in which case the tax would have remained correct.

To check - we need all the figures from the P800. Also your P60 figures for the same year (Pay / Tax / code). And the P60 (same detail) from the pension provider if that is seperate.

    p800 states income 18077 less total deductions 60 income 18017 pers allowance 6475 tax chargeable on 11542 at 20% 2308.40 . tax underpaid 1906.80 !!

OK - there is a differnece in the income of £9548 all of which has not been taxed - what is this? Is it STATE pension and, if so, may I ask what age you are?

OP....you should have 2 P60s possibly? You don't seem to have anything for your pension.

Nor do HMRC seem to know about the tax deducted from it.
