Broker for complicated case.

I've often seen it said on here, not to use a broker who justs ticks boxes.
What questions should I ask, to find one who's more open minded? Also if the answer is "by trial and error", are the initial meetings free of charge?
BTW, I've read the pinned guide so understand whole of market etc.

I have yet to meet a 'close-minded' broker who ticks boxes. If anyone believes that providing FSA regulated mortgage advice is simply a tick-box exercise that they are either stupid or clearly ill informed.
In any business there are both good and bad practitioners and mortgage brokers are no exception. If you believe you have a complicated case and need an understanding shoulder to lean on then I would recommend you phone a few independent brokers and briefly discuss your situation and if you are happy with their initial advice then arrange to visit a couple - always best to get two angles on a difficult case. Initial advice will almost definitely be free.
I promise you will see no box ticking!0 -

or a high street mortgage lender!!!!
As said above, there are good and bad in all walks of life, even Mortgage Consultants. One of the first things a broker HAS to do is provide you with their IDD, this will include their fees and charging structure (as well as if the are whole of market or not) and you can deterime from that when you will incur any cost and when, if you are not happy with it show them the door/put the phone down.

The initial meeting is usually free. I dont know of any that charge for the first meeting.
But Mortgage Apps arnt tick boxes, we have so much paperwork to do behind the scenes you wouldnt believe it.
Its just a case of finding someone you are happy with really. You will spend the next month or 2 talking to this person so if theyre annoying you at the first appointment then its probably not worth going any further. Maybe have a look online for some reviews - you cant trust all reviews but you might get an idea.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it. I have known them to take longer...more so for purchases than re-mortgages.
I shoudl probably have worded it better...it COULD take that long
But from my point of view i prefer to keep people updated, whether it be a text/email or a phone call. That way everyone knows where they stand and if there is a hold up, what has caused it and how long it will take until completion etc.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it.
