Self Assessment Tax overpaid

Hi,

I'm not sure if this is in the right place, but anyway. This morning I received a SA300 form in the post from HMRC which said I have overpaid my self assessment tax return.

I have had a look around to find out how to get a refund but could not find much.

Do I need to write them a letter or ring them up to claim it. If i need to write a letter what do I need to put in it.

Thanks for your help.

First, check it is correct. Do you have any PAYE income or is it all SA? The reason I ask is that a couple of clients with both have had "refund due" letters which have somehow been spat out with their self-employment and investment income missing! So in fact no refund is due to them at all. Yet another blunder from the HMRC stables! I wonder how many folk up and down the country are - knowingly or not - taking the cash, blissfully unaware that in February a big tax demand is likely to appear?

The HMRC usually give you the option of a cheque / refund via BACS / ?offset against your next return? - not sure about this though. Take a look at your last tax return to check which option you selected.

But chrismac, you can surely supply the answer as to how many people have problems with HMRC, because every single one is on your client database.

As for the SA300, as you would know, it is a simple statement of account, it wouldn't give details of the income, as that is included on the SA302.

Frankly your posts are becoming more and more outrageous, and I pity people that take your advice or believe even 1% of what you say.

But they do provide great enjoyment to anyone who knows what they are talking about.

suso, the only reason I have so many client problems with HMRC is that I have a lot of clients! Unless you've had your head stuck down in the sand the past five years, you can't have failed to notice what a mess has been made of the UK tax system. Compared to some accountants I am mild in my criticisms, there is a whole website with a name which will be barred if I try and type it in here dedicated to just how rubbish HMRC is.

My latest mutual finger pointing was a corporation tax return filed correctly but not applied to the database. Dundee office blamed the online services people and surprise surprise the online services people blamed Dundee, just a shame it took them a month to get around to blaming Dundee. In the end I got one of the senior guys in Dundee to take responsibility and fix it, well done Mr. Martin! I wish there were more like you! (ideally a few thousand more)

For the OP, here is a link to a site where other accountants are mentioning this sort of thing and potential solutions.

I've advised my clients not to take the cash.
